One drive you'll love - Coimbatore - Asanur Hill Climb - Team-BHP

Guys,

Its time for Coimbatore's first official team-bhp drive.

I have been travelling on this strech for the past 3 years and I am so smitten with this route that I talk about it to anyone who would listen.

The proposed route is

Coimbatore - Peelamedu - Kalapatti - Kovilpalayam - Annur - Puliyampatti - Sathyamangalam - Dimbam - Asanur

Distance should be 200 kms to and fro.

The route has everything you could ask for. Smooth state highways, flowing corners with a nice bit of ups and downs, 21 hairpin bends on the Bannari - Dimbam strech, from Dimbam its rubberized tarmac with scenery that'll blow your mind away.

What say?

Oct 2nd should be a day off for everyone. We could do a early morning drive. Like say 6.00 AM? Should reach Asanur by 8.00. Have breakfast and return back.

Additionally we could also see if we can get ourselves a bus or a jeep in asanur and probably take the dimbam - talamalai road. It goes deep in the forest and is just jaw dropping AWSOME!!!

So are we going?

That's a brilliant idea Sajeeth. This could also be a good chance to meet up with the Coimbatore T-BHPians (there are quiet a few now!).

Having been on that route, I know it is going to be an enjoyable one-day trip. Any chances of spotting wildlife at this time of the year? Just hoping your luck with wildlife rubs-off on us this time

I can assure you a sighting if we can hit dimbam ghats by 6.30-6.45 AM. Its been raining and the undergrowth should be lush. So there should be quite a few sightings if we can make it before 7-7.30 AM

Anyways let me see if a trip to talamalai / talavady can be arranged. Will be all the more fun.

This idea just struck me... Anyone game for a latenight climb?

If you think this idea is insane

1. You are too old

and/or
2. You have never done this before

We used to do kothagiri hill climbs by 2 in the night. Trust me the number of bisons we run into on the road is to die for. he he....

Let me not confuse ppl. We'll stick to our original plan and make it to asanur for bfast.

these 21 hairpin bends also have some of the steepest : the buses (Ashok Leyland) have to shift down to the actual first gear (which is normally not used : even for climbing to Ooty for example) to tackle those steep curves.

I agree with you, Harrie, the scenery is truly mind-blowing. Keep us updated about the trip : though I would love to do this, i am in Chennai now and can't join :-(

The plan is to do the drive and be back home by 11-11.30
I for one might decide to stay back for a while. I am planning to get on to a bus to talamalai and back.
