Default New York foodies?

Reading about Ramadaan food in Mumbai meet thread makes me hungry.
Anyone in NYC, up for trying out different places in Lex Ave or Jackson Heights for some kebabs and Biryani ?

Such a stereotypical comment, gautam ! There's more than just kfc and mcd's man. Abhijit, I'm sure you must have made a trip or two to mamoun's falafel and kathi roll in Greenwich village; if not, pls do so at the earliest !

Of course, I have been to both places multiple times....

Yes, I agree there are a LOT of options to try out in NYC...but right now I am craving for Hyderabadi biryani, which I am unable to find anywhere in NYC. Any pointers?

If you guys like SPICY thai food -- try Jaya Thai!

On the corner of 28th and 3rd....

However, if you want a "Ramadaan food" like experience -- i suggest taking a train out to Jackson Heights and eating the Halal food at the carts!! YUM.

Tangra masala is awesome.
Interestingly Tangra isnt a slang for leg (Like in "Tangdi Kebab") But its a region in Calcutta, where all chinese reside.

Tangra place? What Tangra place? Where?

OT: Don't mean to hijack this thread (esp since it's headed in a very delicious direction), but is anyone up for a day drive this weekend? Am thinking of stretching the legs of the Camaro V6 this weekend.

Off to California this weekend.

Tangra masala is a famous, cheap Indian chinese place in Queens. Similar to Nanking at Exchange place, but half the price.

Tangra Masala Menu (Indian Style Chinese), 87-09 Grand Avenue, Elmhurst, Queens

Let me know if you are heading there sometime. Would love to join.

Interesting I havent found a place serving good variety of hyd Biryani and Goan fish curry yet in NYC. Both are my favorites :(

Closest Goan-like fish curry i have had is at Sri Krishna Restaurant in Journal Square.

Any other pointers ?

Actually, that's the older Tangra Masala and it's a very small teeny place. They have a branch (Tangra Asian Fusion) off Queens Blvd in Sunnyside (border of Long Island City) - 3923 Queens Blvd @ 42nd St.
Take the 7 to 40th St and walk across, or parking's much easier here than on Grand Avenue.
Most of the management from the older place now work at the newer place - it's HUGE with an additional party hall in the basement.

Banyan Leaf off (Lexington Ave & 27th St), and Bricklane Curry House (6th St b/w 1st & 2nd Ave) have dishes close to Goan fish curry and excellent biryani but you won't find a Goan restaurant here - unless you find a private seller on Sulekha.com or other places.

For Srilankan, try Sigri on (1st Ave b/w 5th & 6th St) - very spicy!

@Rehaan - Jaiya Thai is excellent! They do vary their spice levels if you ask them. Needless to say, lots of Indians frequent this place.

Have been to Brick lane curry house. It disappointed bigtime. Dishes were barely ordinary. Any particular dish you recommend?

Have heard about the new Tangra place. But we keep going to the older place. May be should try the new place now.

Anyone keen on meet sometime next week @ new Tangra ?

and Tangra has some of the 'slurp' Chinese restaurants serving mouth-watering delicacies - Most of them owned by Chinese families living there for ages. That place is the cheapest watering hole in Kolkata. They host one of the biggest Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata.

Boy! i am feeling hungry already

Wish you guys a happy Pet-puja at NY
