Smile Go-Kart Championships at Bangalore

Wow! This turned out to be the biggest Team-BHP meet at Bangalore, about 26 members. I won't put the full report, I pulled in duty as photographer today, reporting will be done by the winners.

This was my first karting experience, therefore was an amazing experience. Although there was a practice round, it took me nearly 4-5 laps before I got the hang of the kart. These karts have zero idling, if you let go the gas-pedal, the engine switches off. Damn, I must say I was doing defensive driving, I was yielding to faster drivers, slowing at hair-pin bends, avoiding (not banging) people who were spinning, etc. After 10 rounds are so I was convinced that the centrifugal force won't topple the kart, I would only skid if I turn too fast. Armed with that I knowledge I started trying faster turns, tighter turns, started working on developing the karting skills. My biceps and shoulders were hurting like hell by all the struggle with the steering wheel. I think I should change my hold next time. I did have some confusion with the rules, I thought it was total time, therefore I didn't try to better my timing after having one crash. Later I realized only the best lap time was counted. I would have tried at least one lap really hard if I had known that before; well, there is always next time. Otherwise, I managed the second worst best lap timing. Thanks Anju (Joz's wife). Wait, she isn't a member, that means I got the worst timing among members. Damn!

The top three honours went to the usual suspects, Mclaren, Psycho, V1p3r and Vasu's son. The third place was a tie.

I'll posting all the photos tomorrow using a hosting site. Today just these will have to do.

Hey, Samurai, some nice pics you got there...you were going about your photog duties pretty seriously!

Can you post up thumbnails on the forum, as links to full-sizers on imageshack? I'd like to download a few pics in max resolution, and 640 x 480 doesn't do your skills too much justice either...

Great to meet some of you guys for the first time, and I'm happy I didn't disgrace myself either...

Default Official go-karting championship timings ..

First i would like to thank all the bhpians for coming and making this show a grand success .. The event was one of its kind , one that everyone enjoyed .. Actually we are planning to do this more often like twice a month henceforth ..

As we didnt know who was capable of what on track we decided to scrap the regular qualification system and then the race , more over we couldnt hire the track to do a complete run .. So instead we randomly picked up 5 guys at a time (based on weight at times) and put them on the karts .. Initially everyone were given 2 practise laps and then were flagged off from the grid .. Each race ran for a duration of 10 min wherein the fastest time setter would eventually qualify for the final heat ..

Classifications for the races were as follows :

Race 1 : samurai , steeroid , anush , shantanu , conan ..
winner : shantanu (34.635 s) ..

Race 2 : suhas , joz, anju , gray , cooljun ..
winner : suhas (34.644 s) ...

Race 3 : tarul , haque , ajmat , vasu , psycho ..
winner : psycho (35.352 s) ..

Race 4 : binz , satan , wolf , darshan , myself ..
winner : myself (33.27 s)..

Race among the top 5 : shantanu , suhas , psyho , v1p3r , myself ..
winner : myself (32.44 s) ..

Official timings of all the members :

1. mclaren : 32 .44 s ..
2. psycho : 33.58 s..
3. v1p3r &
darshan (tie) : 34.00 s..
4. wolf : 34.164 s..
5. shantanu : 34.635 ..
6. suhas : 34.644 s ..
7. cooljun : 35.206 s..
8. anush : 35.293 s..
9. steeroid : 35.313 s..
10. joz : 36.000 s..

12. vasu : 36.305 s..
13. binz : 36.322 s..
14. tarul : 36.431 s..
15. haque : 37.261 s..
16. satan : 37.306 s..

18. conan : 38.106 s..
19. samurai : 38.265 s..

The photos are getting uploaded to a hosting site now. I couldn't do it from home since the upload speed with BSNL broadband is slower than dialup (cheaters ). I decided not to use image shack for this since (i) They don't allow bulk uploads and I have 137 pics. (ii) I took all the photos at 5MP resolution (average filesize 2MB) and image shack has 1MB limitation.

BTW, all of you will have direct access to the original 5MP files.

The upload may complete in couple of hours, thanks for your patience.

I had a great time although I could not stay for "breakfast" - was great meeting all the newer lot.

Came in after a couple of beers so I forgot what Shan2unu looked like - made a total ass of myself - that was the highlight.

Anyway, thanks Mcclaren/ viper for putting this all together

Actually many people are missing in the group photo including Psycho. Wish we took the group photo right after the finish.

Regarding the photos, although I did my best to take many action photos, my effort was getting spoilt by my camera's 0.7 second shutterlag. Therefore, I had to predict where the go-kart will be after 0.7 seconds when I click, that was not easy, it took many attempts. I believe I have taken action shots of most people, often multiple times since I wasn't sure who is who behind the helmets.

Since I have taken all the photos in 5MP, you can download your individual photos, zoom in and crop to get a real close shot. You can also add comments to each photo to identify yourself and to say some nice things about others.

Currently the last batch is getting uploaded, 70MB more to go.

Hats off to Mclaren and V1p3r for arranging and organising a very successful Team-BHP meet, in fact the largest in Bangalore. You guys did a great job.

Thank you for the pics - you're a great guy...showed on track too, where the gentle warrior was very careful and polite.
