Glad to know that the issue might have been resolved. Maybe your friend can go for a 0-100 type test and see if the car is giving back numbers that it should. I cant imagine that the tranny has bust due to hard braking.

SO, isn't this self learning gone wrong? i mean, an occasional incident of hard braking is fair enough and expected in indian conditions at least. If this sends an AT box into limp mode of sorts, what should one make of the robustness of the gearbox that requires such protection?

Right. This sounds like a ridiculous problem. Don't VW test their cars?
How about asking your friend to brake very very hard from 120kmph once again?
And how about doing the same on a TD car (Vento AT)?

I think this is a good suggestion. Your friend should request VW to test drive one of their AT test drive cars (in his presence) with hard braking at 120 kph.
