Default Driven without Air Filter!

Hi - I had taken my green cotton air filter out for cleaning and my wife did not realize it She drove off with the car. Luckily I could stop her within 100 meters inside the apartment complex itself, which is relatively dust free. Hope, I have nothing to worry about?

It is always better to retain the old paper filter to avoid getting into these situations. So when the cotton filter gets cleaned, in goes the old filter.

100m is not going to make much of a difference anyway. Relax and plan for the next filter cleaning session.

It was standard practice for high altitude runs in the old days. So don't bother

lol! I know a fellow bhp'n who drove a car, with a missing resonator (So, outside air is sucked before air filter), from Cochin to Bangalore. Last I know, the car is perfectly fine.

Comparing to that, 100 meters is fine. Do not worry mate!

Nothing would happen for such a short distance even if the atmospheric air is dust laden to the hilt. Prolonged running without the air filter in highly dusty environs, like construction sites can cause some scoring in the valve faces and the valve seat, but I repeat prolonged usage of the vehicle.

@sbhasin: May be worth reminding about the safe practice of keeping the car keys secured -in your pocket or anywhere where nobody else can access it when anything is being done on the car.

Just a routine precaution to prevent accidents while someone is working on the car.

No harm done.
But the mental picture I can conjure of the event looks hilarious!

I am sorry, but can you tell which car was this. I wonder how the engine sound might have changed (for the good) in the 100m run.

Should not be an issue. . In fact when the mechanics clean the throttle body with the cleaner sprays it is done without the filter and what ever little dirt comes off the valves would have to get into the engine!!

A few hundred meters should make no significant difference. In fact even air filters leak a bit, and you will find fine dust in the passage when you clean the filter.

Happened to me a few times, when i had cleaned my filter, and accidentally was too liberal with the oil, some of it reached the flange, and the connecting hose slipped off.
first few times i did not notice, and drove about 2-3 kms each time.
Doesnt happen now, but the last couple of times i noticed immediately, as the intake sound become much more of a crisp roar, rather than just a subdued , er, roar.

only have a 100 odd bhp to deal with, so no performance gain as such to notice

so, carry on.
there're people around who have deliberately punctured OE airboxes to get the perceived benefits, and no issues.
