Default Opel Corsa 1.6 - Strange Issue

Hello Friends,

I own a 2003 Opel corsa 1.6 GLS bought in resale couple of years back.

The car has driven 64000 Kms total and it has been a average ownership experience due to some issues which have come up in the past 6 months.

I have has to replace the ignition key twice and the fuse of the radiator fan burnt twice, thankfull it was Sion Koliwada / Kurla CST road to the rescue.

for the past 1 month i the car has been giving me a strange problem, I have described the sequence below as best as i can.

1. Cold start anytime during the day/night no issue
2. car runs for approx 5-8 kms after a cold start
3. after running for sometime the power suddenly drops and the car stalls as if there is no fuel in the car thought the tank is half full
4. all electrical equipments are functioning fine just to clarify
5.if i crank the car it tries to start but gives a behavior as if the fuel is exhausted.
6.need to rest the car for 30-45 min and then it starts up fine
7.same issue reoccurs after driving another 5-8 kms

I consulted couple of know mechanics in bombay / pune and they saw the culprit is

a. fuel pump
b. ignition coil

I have changed the fuel motor twice in the past 1 month and still the same result, currently the car is on its original fuel motor which resides inside the fuel tank.

I appreciate any help the experts can provide in helping me resolve this issue.

since the monsoons have arrived I need to get the car fixed asap. My trusted mechanic has asked me to give him the car on the coming Thursday so he can eliminate this issue however I would like to give him all ideas / suggestions that our forum can gather to resolve this. currently the car is not drivable and is in Pune.

Check your Fuel Filter , Wiring to the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. Since corsa does not have an inertia fuel switch we can rule that out. Please swap/change the fuel pump replay first and check if the fuel pump fuse is heating up, if yes then the wiring or fuse contacts are bad.

Jimmy, I think the car is giving you problems after it has reached it's operating temperature. So please check: 1) Radiator for blockage/ Coolant leak, 2) Radiator fans, fuses & relays, 3) Water pump condition.

Thumbs down Re: Opel Corsa 1.6 - Strange Issue

check the Fuel filter. In fact replace it if you have not replaced it recently. Check for voltage supply to Fuel pump. Also check for fuel pressure in fuel rail.

I have a feeling that fuel pump is not working once heated up, and is approaching its end of life. you have mentioned that you changed motor? Did you meant that you changed the fuel pump assembly?

I had a similar issue and the culprit in my case was the fuel pump.
A mechanic @Electra in Chennai finally diagnosed it after a few failed.

I don't know what he did, but he told me that the pump was serviced and was set at a higher position now and that I should have a minimum of 10-15 litres in car or the pump would not work and the car would stall again..

Never faced the issue again. Been over two years I think.
Just that for me,if the fuel goes below 15l mark, its tank dry. lol.

I can live with it, as the car is sparingly used, when i want vroooom around.

Hello Vdiatech,

I spoke to my mechanic and he too has come to the same conclusion, he mentioned that such fuel pumps coming in from china last around 6-8 months and then need to be replaced, he also mentioned that the original once are the best choice, I am looking around for a second hand but no luck yet, I am giving him the car tomorrow for work , lets see what comes up.He is going to give me the quote for the original pump by tomorrow.

You cannot get Original Ignition Coil, across counter in India.
The only place ( I am sure of in Chennai, dont know elsewhere ) are the former authorised Opel service centres like SUNDARAM MOTORS, who do have stock of genuine OEM parts. They dont sell it across counter, but fix it for you for a premium.

In Chennai, I had gone for Ignition Coil, they quoted 15K !
I went to my trusted spare part shop, got chinese( I think ) for 2.5K. It came with a 6 month warranty and 2 years on, still works !

Your other option is to source fuel pump/Ignition coil from UK EBay...

Is the problem sorted out. Ignition coils may fail to deliver the required voltage when heated up.
Btb let me ask one question - How much fuel remains in the tank at any time?

@ Rajeev_K- The fuel level is most of the time around half tank.

@maverhick - thanks for the no will try this vendor.

The ignition coil seems to be faulty as the mechanic has replaced the fuel motor and still the same issue persists.
