to some extent but car manufacturers always suggest few recommended oil brands to be used for better results & efficiency. In fact recently during my conversation with a GM at MASS who is known to me well had shared offline that it is all about dealer margins when it comes to using the oils. In fact, he suggested to just stick to Shell MGDO 15W40 Oil which costs about INR 750/- for 3.1 ltrs at MASS and change it every 10K KMS for Ritz Diesel. He himself uses a Ritz Diesel and uses the same oil as mentioned above and shared a complete download on using the oils for Maruti Diesel cars. But I plan to change oil every 5K KMS.

I am not 100% sure if it is Semi Synthetic or Synthetic but the seller who offered the specified oil informed that it can be used and changed every 10K KMS.

15W40 oil @ Rs 750 for 3.1 litre seems to be mineral my dear and 10K interval is too long one. I'll stick to the either of the below given combinations:

1) Use 5W40 grade (Fully synthetic) and change every 10K

or

2) Use 15W40 grade @ Rs 300 per litre (mineral) and change every 5K kms.

& currently running on Shell MGDO 15W40 which I will be changing at 15K KMS service at MASS. This will be done at 5K KMS interval.

My confusion was on Mobil Super MGDO 5W40 SM which costs around Rs. 600/- per ltr. Is this Fully Synthetic or Semi Synthetic, I am not sure. Any of the gurus need to clarify here. If this is Fully Synthetic, then I am going to use this oil in future for sure and change oil every 10K KMS.

Anurag.
When my Dzire went for its 3rd free service, the oil was Mobil 5W40 and it was mentioned in the bill as semi synthetic, the recommended change was also said to be 10k kms. The SA, also was sure that this is the oil that the car comes out of factory now.

Mineral - ~ 300 - 350 per litre
Semi-synthetic - ~ 600 - 700 per litre
Fully synthetic - ~ 900 - 1000 per litre.

I am confused I guess, please check with your SA which grade is to be used and the interval. I'll ask here and see what it.

Could be semi-synthetic oil here. May be I am wrong. Will check with my SA once.

Saw a picture of MGDO Shell HX8 AZ fully synthetic diesel oil in another forum. The cost is said to be around ~2200 odd for 3.5L. The spec is ACEA A3/B4 10, API SN and FIAT 9.55535Z2

I changed to HX6 Diesel for my 35K oil change (done outside M.A.S.S) and liking it. I do my 10K changes at MSM Chennai and they use MGDO diesel 15W40 from shell as per the invoice if the customer choice is mineral. Need to figure out whether it is HX5 or HX6. For synthetic, they use Mobil1 0W40 and I avoid it due to conflicting feedback on the oil being applicable for petrol only.

A similar conflict of opinion exists for Shell Helix ultra as both Mobil1 0W40 and Shell helix ultra are only API SN/CF. Some state on this forum that CF is not suitable for diesel but heard other state that CF/CX does not matter with synthetics. TML recommends Mobil1 explicitly for the diesel, and have seen Skoda's recommends on shell helix ultra.

Hi Friends,
My ride is a Ritz Diesel. I have an interesting question-What is the feel of using synthetic Castrol EDGE 5w40 /Shell 5w40/ Mobil1 5w40 or any other 5w40 synthetic engine oil in the old swift/Dzire/Ritz? Is the drive as smooth as you get with mineral oil for the first 20-30 kms after oil change? I have noticed that immediately after changing the engine oil the car behaves like a petrol car. Is that feeling always there when you use 5w40 synthetic in your old Dzire/Swift/Ritz? Just curious to know the experiences of other keen drivers.

When I had the Ritz, I was using mineral oil till 30K changing every 5K kms. After 30K, I started using synthetic oil 5W40 oil. Initially felt the engine to be smooth but didn't believe it. As the car clocked miles I felt that the car is smoother till 9K kms after the oil change edges the last 1K kms is bad.

Currently I am driving a Swift ZDi which is factory filled with synthetic oil so car is smooth since Day 1.

May be a driver will notice the smoothness initially but later on both oils feel the same.

MSM Chennai was allowing 2011 Swift users the option of mineral and the choice of oil was MGDO Shell 15W40 which is actually HX5D. It costed around Rs 250 per litre.

Now they have shifted to Mobil MGDO 5W40 for non synthetic users which costs Rs 550/liter and seems to be semi synth.

Hi Anurag,
I have a swift vDi which has run around 25k kms.I am using synthetic oil from first oil change onwards(@ 10k). Changed last at 20k from MASS in bangalore. At 22k when i checked the engine oil(for the first time ) it looked black. Now after a long trip, at 25k, the oil looks very black. Is this normal? or Is it an indication that I have to change oil? Please advise

Thanks

Relax buddy, it is normal.

Pour the new oil and drive for 500 kms and you'll see the oil in black.

Initially even I had panicked and changed the oil + oil filter (though I was on mineral) but after 500 kms it looked black. So left it at that and then on keep changing every 10K kms as per schedule.

Appears like Maruti has changed the spec to 0W20 now and standardizing across all models. Any one came across this?

They have filled 0w20 in my wagonR (owner manual says 5w30 is best), am contemplating what to do!

Mods, this seems to be a better place Maruti engine oil questions, please merge to appropriate thread, if needed.

Does your waggy come with the K-Series engine? If yes then please ask to see the circular which talks about this change.

5W30 is the recommended grade, I believe you can opt for a grade which is lower than 5 and higher than 30, i.e. 0W40 but not the other way round, which is 0W20.

My recommendation would be to get them to drain and replace with the recommended grade. Do also see what some of the other members have to say

There is nothing to panic I would say. 5W30 is just fine. And i believe the SVCs will have both the grade oil in stock. In my owners' manual, both the grades have been mentioned.

I filled 5W30 Total oil in my 1st free service.
