I came across an intriguing mod done in Down Under on one of their automotive sites. Don't know whether it is hyperbole or fact.

Salient facts:

1. Diesel engines can be 'converted' to run with LPG : However LPG is more of an additive here than a complete conversion as seen in petrol engines. I couldn't gather how substantial the conversion process is. Details are there in the page.

2. Increased power across the rev range : That is what is interesting. Rather than toting theoretical max power output at the redline rpm, this tech increases power output by X%(the site claims 25%. I take that with a pinch of salt).

3. Suitable for both naturally aspirated and turbo'ed diesels : LPG'd Skoda Octavia, anyone?

BUT on second thoughts, I probably wouldn't want a LPG'd APE auto on the roads.:Frustrati

4. 'Little' loss of cabin space - This is subjective. More suitable for say, a Safari than an Indica. However, the amount of LPG needed is not much. So probably the cylinder can be mounted under body.

5. Increased mileage - As power increases across the rev range, it translates to lesser 'pedal-to-the-metaling'.stupid: A hilarious aftershoot of this will be lesser frayed nerves and praying for the rpm needle to reach the hallowed turbo land.

6. Cleaner emissions - Cleaner in the sense that NO2 emissions are halved but CO emissions jump up by 70%.

7. Cost - In one word, prohibitive!. The source estimates the conversion to cost atleast 4000 AUS. But the Australian federal government gives a 50% subsidy on that. Probably, the cost could come down with wider adoption.

I also read the article after your post. I just thought that introducing more fuel to system without increasing the oxygen supply to burn it will result in increased CO (Carbon Monoxide) emission, which is what has been written in the article.

NOx emissions will automatically come down once the temperature of the combustion is reduced due to incomplete burning of LPG, which will produce CO. This is what Exhaust Gas Re-circulation does, introducing burnt gases back into the intake to reduce the temperature of combustion to reduce NOx.

Great Thought and invention though :)

This is correct, LPG when added as an additive to Diesel makes a big difference on the performance of vehicle, I cannot take the name of person who is working on this in Bangalore because it is not legal practice still in India but developing an ECU for this is in development stage and hence the work is happening at slow pace. This has also been tested in Europe which the article has missed mentioning. Thanks for sharing this information.

In Chennai also, this concept is booming as one of the friend who has LPG Conversion shop/Distributor is currently working out for Diesel-LPG conversion. He is a STAG distributor already.

The first world country costs wouldn't be the same as what it would cost in India - they have more regulation related costs etc. Another factor is that this would be niche market. Plus skilled labour costs.

For eg. take the CNG conversion cost mentioned in a US CNG website.

8000 USD!!

I have asked this mod to be done in my magnum tcdi long back but none were confident to do as its a new concept in india though in abroad countries ready made kits are available.

Article which mentions pros n cons, main reasons why tuners are not taking risks with this method.
