Default General driving doubts, please reply.

[SIZE=2]I'm new to this forum, this is my first post.
I just bought a Maruti Suzuki Swift Vxi, metallic azure grey. I have a few question to ask
not about the car, but about general driving.

1) Will any fault accur in the gearbox if the driver rests his hand on the gear stick while driving? I mean long time problems.

2) [SIZE=2]
While driving on 5th gear at 80kmph, you can slow down till 40kmph and pick
up speed at the same gear, i know its possible, but wouldn't it be bad for the vehicle, to give so
much load to the fifth gear.

I didn't know which thread to put this under, this seemed the most appropriate, the site should have another forum for driving tips and stuff like that.
Thanks
Please reply.

As long as your hand doesn't cause any grating sound from the gearbox, it shouldn't cause any problems.

Check your car manual. The company would have specified the optimum shift points for evey gear. Follow what they say. I usually down-shift from 5th to 4th at 70-75kmph (on the Vtec). Have always got awesome FE from my car.

Having your hand on the gear, while driving is a violation of the Driving Etiquette...! I remember Dad telling me that Once when we was giving his driving test in Dubai, one of the persons was failed because of this...!

No Damage whatsover will be done as long as you don't engage the gear or so..!
