Default Infinity Cars (BMW Dealer) wants Rs. 4,000 to Re-charge the battery!

Hello Everyone,

I recently got my BMW 520d's first service in Mumbai.

Demands:

1. Engine Oil Replacement
2. Air Filter & Oil Filter Replacement
3. Tyre Rotation
4. Wiper Blade Replacement
5. Rear left door Sun Blind roller lubrication fluid leak

Resolution:

1. Oil, 2 Filter's Replaced
2. Wiper Blades Replaced
3. Tyre Rotation Done
4. Service Adviser informs that the battery is weak and needs charging. I have to spend 4k to just get it charged and then they will test to check whether the battery is good or not. If not then the driving profile will be verified and only then replacement will be judged.
5. For the sun blind roller, my adviser informs me that the issue is resolved and I can pick up the car.

I told him to not charge the battery since I will drive it for 1000 km withing 4 days and then allow him to check. So I went ahead to pick up my car since the adviser reported all issues to be resolved.

Now, I verify the issues reported and find out that the sun blind roller has not been touched and the lubrication fluid is all around the door trim, I am shocked and question him. He had nothing to say and promises to get it done tomorrow. So I leave empty handed!

Next day, I fire an email to BMW Aftersales Director and escalate the matter along with the battery issue. Why do I have to pay Rs. 4000/- when I have purchased the "BSI Ultimate Package" for 5 years? Immediately the dealer calls and promises to do the charging for free and also replace the sun blind roller! I had a very harsh argument with the dealer and also informed BMW to take this matter seriously. I am not a customer who tolerated nonsense!!!

Now, Dealer informs me that I should drive my car every alternate day to maintain my battery charge, BMW Technical Specialist informs to drive the car twice a week for 20 km. Finally I manage to arrange a call with the After Sales Director, BMW India and he correctly informs that I need to drive only once a week to maintain the battery's charge! What a sigh of relief! Hence the bottom line was that if you do not drive you pay for a new battery else BMW pays if you drive regularly and the car profile which they extract manages to confirm that!

Battery was charged and roller replaced and washed properly, following which I picked her up with a broad smile. Will use it more often now.

This, on a car with a 5 year BSI Ultimate package? Ridiculous when a new battery for the Europeans cost Rs. 8,000 (last I replaced). If that isn't a royal rip-off, I don't know what is.

It's unfortunate but true : These gizmo-laden cars chew through the battery even when they're standing still. I'd say try driving it twice a week whenever you can.

Can you please name this BMW dealer? He better learn how to pamper his customers who've given him 50 lakhs worth of business!

+1 GTO

Not just 50 lakhs but the after sales money also is big so we give these comapnies a good business!

This dealer and his staff need to be taught how to behave well with their customers. Spending so much of hard earned money and buying such high-end cars and if this is the treatment and rip-off customers get then blaming Maruiti/Skoda/Hyundai is not correct.

Yesterday got my friends 530d booked for alignment and bill was Rs 4300. That's without the wheel balancing and on visual inspection camber was out. Argument ensued, test rode the car and found the car to be pulling to left and steering out.

Had to get the alignment done again to rectify the issues. This is the level of BMW service in India. Just pathetic to say the least and highly unprofessional. Poor service and prices they charge for it makes even worse.

I see maximum rip-offs tried on costlier cars. Really a shame seeing such events being seen so frequently for European brands. Or maybe the cheaper car owners just don't report them so often than a bloke who had already shelled out 50L for his four wheels and who expects a certain level of post sales service to follow.

A close friend was asked to pay 5000 bucks for his X1's alignment, that too when it is a known generic problem in X1 and he had bought the maintenance pack. According to him BMW service center in Gurgaon has terrible service support, they expect the car to be left with them for weeks even for a few hours work, and his car has not very reliable.

Even with the Zero Depreciation BMW Insurance he lost a big amount of money when his car was hit, Bajaj Allianz paid their basic part but BMW refused to pay their part, not everyone has time and patience to fight a legal battle to decades, he learnt his lesson and moved on with whatever he got.

What is up with BMW dealers and bad service lately? Check your battery terminals it might be loose. I doubt you need a new battery within a year of ownership.

While we are discussing the poor service of BMW service centre across India, here is a price list for few things for 530d.

Front shock absorber Rs 22,000 (Approx)
Front pads Rs 15,000 (Approx)
Rear Pads Rs 11,000 (Approx)

Prices exclude labour charges. I feel if the poor service and shoddy practice by the dealers continues then used BMW car market will fall further. Eventually hurting the future of BMW in India.

A BMW kiddy cycle for a 2yr old Rs 21,000.

Unlike Maruti and Hyundai the number of cars serviced on any day is very very less for these cars. And as there is no economy of scale it is natural that the dealer starts fleecing their customers. Definitely a very bad practice. A new scam in the making.

Which dealer is this?
Please write to BMW India telling them about this. It's quite sad how customers are treated in this country.
People just want to make a quick buck. There's no concept of the bigger picture. In the long run, everyone loses!

The 5 series does indeed drain a lot of battery. I have BSI too and my battery has been replaced several times without a problem or charge. I don't see why you dealer tried to charge you for it.

My advice is always stick to Navnit motors for service. We have a fellow BHPian heading the service there hence you know it is in good hands.

Thanks for your support everyone!

@GTO: Yes, this is indeed after the 5 year BSI Ultimate package. The dealer is indeed Infinity Cars. Also, after firing an email to BMW the battery charging cost was waived off and the reason being "as a good will gesture"! How amazing right?

@Randhawa: The price you have quoted are the cheaper parts of BMW! The OVRM is almost Rs. 78000 and in case you happen to just break the mirror then it will cost you a jolly good Rs. 32000.

@a4anurag: No point teaching BMW a lesson because they shamelessly agree that I have damaged the battery by not using it. In fact their technical specialist informed me about the driving profile I had for the last 2 months - 18 trips out of which 10 were less than 5 miles and 8 were more than 5 miles therefore according to him I damaged the battery.

@i<3turbo: Terminals are ok. I checked them myself last week. Anyway the battery was charged for free and I am using it more often now.

@.anshuman: BMW is a total rip off as far as service is concerned. Yes they indeed charge Rs. 5000 for an alignment.

@Sahil: Thanks for your advice. I will indeed go to Navnit Motors henceforth. Can you please help me with his name?

So the bottom line is that I have been suggested two choices by the Aftersales Director:
1. Use the car once a week for 15-20 km at least.
2. Buy the BMW trickle charger and keep it always. I cost in India is Rs. 10400 and in USA it is $57 (MRSP $69) so I bought it for Rs. 3150 and my friend will bring it along next month.

I also received written responses from the Aftersales Director as follows:

1. Battery Charging Cost under BSI : You may please note that a defective battery would be part of the warranty or beyond warranty BSI package, provided the battery was maintained correctly. In your case, lack of use made recharge necessary and is therefore not covered under BSI or warranty.

Dealer had informed that he will top up the engine oil for free but not brake oil, so I questioned BMW:

2. Topping up of engine oil and brake oil under BSI Package : We wish to inform you that topping up of brake fluid is not required. The level will lower when brake pads wear out, but this of no concern, top up not allowed as replacement of brakepads within wear limits will correct this situation. Replacement of brake fluid at defined service intervals is covered by BSI Ultimate. Top up of engine oil has not been communicated and it is optional by dealers.

The terms and conditions only mention about the exclusion of Balancing & Tyres but not Alignment. Should I fight with them ? Unless they manage to prove?

3. Costs for Wheel Alignment Repairs : As per terms and conditions, please refer to exclusions, balancing and wheel alignment is excluded as well as others.

Also charging the battery at home in case it dies again is a pretty simple job and many companies include the procedure in the owner's manual -

Ask your service adviser to put you in touch with Sushil when you go to Navnit.

His name on the forum is Maverick5490(I might be wrong with the numbers). Gem of a guy, do get in touch with him.
