Default Mitsubishi Lancer: Issue with Gearshift & RPM fluctuation

Hi,

My lancer Petrol , 2002 model has currently finished 73k kms on the odometer. Its not used much now except a few kms on the weekend to just give it some exercise. Today took it out for a spin and came across 2 problems:

1. The gear has become very notchy in 1st and 2nd gear. 3rd, 4th and 5th do not offer any resistance. Now even the 1st and 2nd gears are tough to engage only in the beginning and once the car is at its ambient temperature then the gear shifts too become better. But still it never was butter smooth as it used to be. A few times it offers a lot of resistance and requires considerable force to engage, at other times offers less resistance and then sometimes gets butter smooth again. What can be the problem? Does the gear oil or something needs to be changed?

2. The second problem I noticed was while standing at the signal that at idling the rpm needle stays put at 900-1000 rpm but every 5-10 seconds it starts revving on its own and jumps to 1.2-1.4k rpm and then again falls back to the base level. This keeps repeating. Any idea why is this normal? How do I fix this? This must be taking its toll on the FE of the car too.

Waiting for some answers on the above 2 questions.

Regards,
Mohit

Default Re: Queries about Lancer Petrol

1. Gear Shifts=
When was the last time gear oil changed?
Normally gear oil should be replaced every 20KKms (or as recommended in owner's manual).
If the car is used mainly in bumper to bumper traffic where gear shifts are often, gear oil should be replaced more often (If manufacturer's recommendation is 20KKms normally, then under frequent gear shifts driving conditions replace gear oil at 15KKms).

Also check the Gear Lever Bushes (if there is too much in the gear lever).

2. Rpm needle=
a. Adulterated Petrol-
Have you filled petrol from untrusted petrol pump? There is a possibility of adulterated petrol got filled in your car.
b. Fuel (Petrol Filter)-
When was Fuel Filter replaced last time? It should be replaced as per manuf. recommendation or more frequently if adulterated fuel is used.
c. Spark Plugs-
When were the Spark Plugs replaced last time? Check the Gap between electrodes and replace if the electrodes have worn out.
d. Throttle Body-
I don't know whether Throttle Body cleaning is related to your problem.
But please check the above points first and if a, b, c found OK, then go for Throttle Body Cleaning.

It could be that the clutch is on the way out. This sometimes happens in cars which are not used for some time. The symptoms initially appear in first and second gear. However, it is also possible that the same symptoms would appear if the gear oil viscosity isnít right so changing the gear oil could also solve the issue.

This could be a vacuum leak so it is best to have it checked up at the earliest.

Gear problem is usually the clutch wearing out. If it is not the clutch, then the synchros maybe worn out a bit. There is a way of adjusting the play for the gears that makes it easier to slot in. This is a temporary fix and it becomes the same after some time.

The best would be to let the car idle for a few minutes and work the gears a couple of times.

The idling one is easy. There is an idle air control valve or IAC valve. This valve gets stuck and is unable to regulate the idle rpm. Needs cleaning. They can clean the throttle body and this valve together and it will fix it.

Read my ownership thread for more details. BOth problems are covered.

I think VSS has given you the best advice.
(1) You are either likely to have a sticky clutch (check the hydraulics, change the clutch fluid if required), or your gear oil is old and congealed, and needs a change - best to change the clutch oil as well as the gear oil together, bleed the clutch well, and try out again. If this fails, you need a clutch overhaul.

(2) Fluctuating rpm - commonly due to a vacuum leak from a rubber pipe that's deteriorated. Check this carefully first. Also use a fuel system cleaner like System G. And your car deserves an Italian tuneup (after completing the checks).
