I own a Fiesta S petrol which has clocked 17000 km on the odometer.A few days back, I noticed a little problem.Just today, I investigated a little better by opening the hood. Here's what I can make out. When I start the car first time in the morning, there is a faint krrrrrrrr noise from near the serpentine belt.As the engine starts to warm up the noise starts to decrease in loudness and frequency. On revving the engine, the noise vanishes.Help me please.

I would be glad if someone diagnose this quite unnerving development - the petrol Swift sounds like a very badly maintained helicopter readying for takeoff !
Turned out to be sound from a worn out rear wheel bearing.Replaced it at the Maruti Service Center and all is well again!

Mine's a 2006 Accent 1.5 Petrol. A few months ago, I noticed a creaking noise when the car leans on the right rear suspension. No sound while running on flat tarmac, or while taking speed-breakers in a straight line.

Got it checked at Hyundai A.S.S., and they said it's fine. When I persisted, they said they'll replace a few components if I wanted, to which I said NO. Now the sound has increased, I mean it's evident even on a bad road, while earlier it was happening only when the car leaned completely on the right rear.

What can be wrong? I don't want to change the entire assembly just because the Hyundai jokers can't find what's wrong.

Have you checked if all the suspension bushes are in tact? And have you checked for the sound after a good under body pressure wash? If the sound vanishes for few days after a wash it might be a worn out or badly lubricated bush.

Hope you have ruled out issues like a badly aligned door/door hinge, they also can cause creaking sounds especially at certain odd angles.

Difficult to say, as I haven't been able to replicate it while stationary. It's most evident if I take a tall speed-breaker at an angle. A sound very similar to a creaking joint. But I have no issues while normal driving.

Important to mention, I had my car transported on a trailer last November, and those guys normally tie the car down using belts on shafts. Would that have caused an alignment issue?

I got the entire right-rear checked at H.A.S.S, and the guy who took the test drive before-and-after, said nothing's wrong. But the issue seems to be getting worse. H.A.S.S. want to change the right-rear suspension parts, but that seems more like a ploy to make me go away, rather than sorting the issue out.

Have you checked the cars underbody? If not please do this first to see any abnormalities (something loose etc)? As you say the noise has increased it can also be something which was just loose became more loose and causing more fouling. I have noticed such failure pattern while we used to test vehicles (hand brake cable fouling with propeller shaft, shock absorbers etc). Also, you say the sound is prominent while taking turns while going through a speed breaker this is a typical failure mode of suspension articulation leading to fouling-- so check if there are any rubbing marks underneath. If all this is cleared, I would suspect the wheel ends then.

As it is the rear suspension, we can keep this on hold for time being (less chances of happening), front suspension would be more prone to such damage. This is what I feel, exact diagnosis is possible if the noise pattern is first ascertained.

What part do they want to change? Any idea?

Get all the doors including boot lid checked for proper alignment, sometimes it can be as simple as that. Get someone to sit behind and figure out the sound, that should be the easiest way to identify the culprit if its one of the body parts.

@Jaggu: The SA did mention a specific part, but the name's slipped my mind. I'll check with them again and revert. I do seem to remember he quoted about 3K+ labor for the repair, which I refused in the absence of a firm diagnosis. I'll also get the doors and boot-lid alignment checked.

@Spike: I did do a cursory visual and tap-check on the under-body to check for loose parts, but everything seemed fine. I'll get a mechanic to do a detailed inspection.

I am hearing kind of hollow sound (घों घों type of sound, sorry but couldn't find appropriate word for this sound so used Hindi). It doesn't have any pattern, some time it comes at very low speed 30-40 kmph, some times at very high speed though on high speed, the sound level is very promising.

It stays on for few minutes and then disappears.

The car is Tata indica v2 2004 Model.

Unhappy Re: What's that sound ??

Friends,

Since this morning, on my i-10 Sportz Kappa-2, less than 5000 Kms done, i have been hearing this metal scraping noise for like 2 seconds...as part of shifting gears.

To be more precise, it's right at the moment, when i start removing my foot of the clutch (after having slotted to the intended gear) and start pressing on the gas.

Has me concerned a bit, any pointers guys ?

Question Re: What's that sound ??

Yet another query on sound, not one, but two.

1) Whenever I am buckled up and the car sways over an uneven patch, I hear a squeaking (as rats do) sound from inside where the seat-belt is buckled. I do not think applying grease or oil is advisable as those will dirty our dress. Any body else experiencing this? This was not present when the car was new. Is there an alternative?

2) The muffler on my in-laws 3 year old i10 is producing a sports car like vroom these days. I guess one or two plates inside the muffler has rusted. Although I enjoy the sound, I wanted to know if running thus is bad for the car in the long run?

It might be coming from the buckle i.e. where you lock in the belt.

Na, it won't harm the car in any way. But one fine day, the car will sure sound like a tractor climbing a hill!

Yes, but is there any solution for it? Have anybody else been through this irritating noise? I am experiencing it in a 3yr old i10 and a 6yr old Baleno.

My 1 year old Honda City has it :P

I spent 2 hours at the A.S.S. trying to explain the noise, let the mechanics drive the car in the lousiest of roads and yet there was nothing. The moment I got out of A.S.S., dad buckled his seat belt and the noise popped up! By then, we were in no mood to go to A.S.S. again.

I really don't know if there's a solution apart from replacing it. If your car's under warranty, try it! Maybe a couple of drops of oil might help.
