Question

I need to know where I could get a diff lock fitted onto my Safari Dicor 4X4. Ideally, I would like both the front as well as the rear diffs fitted out with diff locks....

Could any of you Gurus please help out here?

Most appreciated!

ranjit,

Why do you want to lock differentials ?
Or you are talking about Door Locks ?

Nice to see some fun at the technical stuff section also.

Ps: This thread should have nothing to do with door locks

My my thats serious stuff you are talking about and i earnestly do not think any regular mechanic can handle that job,

diff locks(front and rear)is one suggestion and question we have to forward to TATA motors,

i mean think people the big TATA with 2.2l,140bhp(estimated)with all round diff locks and with the already available and competent LSD!!then i would be cocking my snook at all the other imported hardware around me(read toyota landcruisers and pajeros)

ranjit sorry for being off topic and even though i am not of much help here iam seriously writing a letter to tata on this,

signature campaign anyone.........

Are you talking about a locking differential?
You can try Dana or Detroit Locker but it may not be a straight fit.

Default The doors lock just fine, thank you!

Hey, nice to see you guys writing in! Er, no, not talking about the door locks bayuin2004, but thanks for the tip!

But dr fate, yes locking the diffrentials is what I mean. The much touted LSD is worth cr*p. I had had my Landcruiser (not in India) fitted out with a diff lock on the front diff and it worked off a vaccum pump activated from a switch inside...very convenient in those sticky situations. Never got stuck in the muck after that. But with the 2.25 ton Safari I feel it might be a good idea to have the rear diff fitted out as well.

Sounds like a very alien idea in this forum...I guess the diffrence between 'soft'-roading as compared to 'off'-roading...

A retro-fit shouldn't cost more than 20-30 k, but methinks the hard part is going to be finding somebody capable of doing it.....

If a signature campaign would help, count me in!

i agree and thats why i said it was serious stuff and getting diff locks for global models are easy but tata safari has very limited scope for modifications on these levels as of now....but your idea is a thought prevoking one and i have contacted a few people relating to this subject and will tell you their observations on the cost viablity, compatiblity and such things, however if you have a trax its a easy job since their gurkha already has these and has off-road capablity words cannot express,

i will try to do my bit

Not many rock crawlers here that use a Air Locker.

If you are looking for ready made kit for the Safari, you're going to be out of luck unless TATA copied the axle design from a popular Dana or something like that.

Try ARB or Detroit Locker to find one that can be retrofitted, or check if the one from the TRAX can be reworked.

it's going to be hard retrofitting. dana makes diffs for ford if i'm not mistaken right? seeing as how tata and mercedes had a relationship not too long ago. the trax/gurkha might not be too hard to work.

allan(xtreme_power) might know he's into off-roading too

what kind of off-roading are you looking at.

you would be intrested to know that though 4*2 safari comes with a tata designed drive-line,4*4 comes with a dana LSD and inputs so there is potential here...we are infact trying to get hold of electronic and manual diff locks(former toyota and latter trax),

lets see how it goes fortunately we have a few serious off roader's in our list who are willing to "lend their safaris"and we have stripped one vehicle lets see.
