Yes there was a shortage & there were very few colours available to choose from hence I had to settle for Naples Gold when I wanted Black. Even then though there was a discount on them, I got nearly 50k off!

Ishan

Looks like the Naples Gold was a popular colour in 2003 towards the end of OHC production. Even my '03 OHC is a Naples Gold and is an October one.

Dippy - Gold has always been popular with City's both OHC & NHC. Another reason I think is that Honda might have thought that they would do the last cars in Gold as they are quite easy to sell. Plus I think late 2002-onwards models there was no Heather Mist as an option (Viper's car for instance) and only Naples Gold was available so there are many cars in that colour.

There was another colour called Maharaja Gold when the Type 1 was launched. It was supposed to be more expensive than the rest of the lot and available on in 1.5 Exi trim. I wonder the difference between Maharaja and naples Gold was . Both look similar to me

A close friend owned a Maharaja Gold 1.5 Exi & the colour was more golden & lighter than the Naples Gold which has more of a Brownish tint & is much much darker than the Maharaja Gold. If you compare the two side by side then you can see that there is quite a bit of difference among them.

I think the Gold offered on the NHC is quite similar to Maharaja Gold.

Guys when was the OHC launched in India, when did the first car come on the road?

We got ours when it was launched I guess, its an April 1998 model and the chasis and engine numbers are under 1,000.

Does that mean we own one of the first thousand Honda Citys to be manufactured?

Yes and some members on the forum already own this car. It was not sold in very small numbers, she raked up quite a decent sales performance. They sold lots more of the 1.3 then the VTEC just for the record.

iraghava: is the 1.3 motor better than NHCs 1.5 ? Have any idea what mileage it used to deliver ?

Well that's a personal preference actually. The 1.3 was a good engine but was a bit short of torque in city driving so had to be wound up to get some performance out of it whereas the NHC's engine has quite good torque low-down & can pootle around in the town relatively easily.

FE of the 1.3 was worund 14-16 kmpl, maybe more with a sedate driver on the highways.

I might be a little late here .. you mean to say that driving below 5200 rpm would be just like driving a 1.5?

VTEC actually kicks in at around 4200 rpm in the OHC.

Driving below VTEC point will actually make the car produce less power than the 1.5 as the cam lobes are designed for economy.

This is why the VTEC is slower in its roll on figures.

But the good thing is that even if you drive at 140kmph (3900rpm in 5th), you can still expect around 15kmpl. If you try doing the same on the 1.5, the FE figures will be lower as it uses a more aggressive cam "lift/duration" at that rpm.

But if you want a better cam, you can go in for a D16 Z6 one, where the lift/duration is even lower than stock below VTEC and higher than stock once VTEC kicks in.

The diff is so big that you can actually hear the VTEC kicking in.

Heres my one of my fav VTEC sound clip from youtube.

But on your VTEC can you make out when it comes on?
I never feel the "surge" or change in pitch as many ppl claim to feel/hear.

All that happens is the increased roar because of higher RPM.
