Was this behaviour (steering) present before you bought the car?
Its very unusual though.

Nope. Doesn't happen in all cars.
Is your steering adjustable? Perhaps it's not 'locked-in' properly, the way it should be. Call up the dealer/previous owner and understand its functioning from him/her. During my initial days of car-ownership, even I had got worried when the seat would move forward/backward when the car moved. Later found out that it wasn't locked-in properly.

The OHC definitely didnt come with rake adjustible steering. You have a problem. Was it ruled out beyond doubt that the car wasnt in any accident during its previous ownership(s) ?

how many kms has the car run??was it involved in any accidents??
the only posible explanation for the play in the steering wheel is that the steering column has been damaged orhas worn out.
the end of the steering column has some teeth on it which are used to lock in with th steering wheel.after sometime they get worn out.
the same thing happened in my zen as well and the fault was attributed to the wearing out of the steering column.it cost me 4k for a new one.so you should first gt your steering column checked.

test drive of course (the one that you do before handing over cash and feeling possessed by the OHC)

sankeerthreddy, you have a problem, the OHC's steering is not tiltable / rake adjustable.
