The Safari 2.2 has an oil change interval of 15000kms!
A source tells me that the engine can run mineral oil without problems till 25-27K and 15K oil change interval is pretty sufficient.
Whats so special about that engine that mineral oil can last 15000kms?
Any ideas fellas?

I was earlier thinking that maybe because it takes in a large amount of oil(7.5 liters), that could be the cause. Or maybe it revs to a max of 4000rpm approx with normal cruising below 2500-3000rpm

Internationally also oil change intervals are now 10000 miles instead of the earlier 3000-5000 miles. What exactly has changed?

Old era Engines needed frequent oil changes because of their moving part clearances was not as good as you find in today's engines. Also the engine oil quality in the last few years have increased a lot. Their ratings/Specs reflect the same. This has been the reasons why now-a-days manufacturers are recommending extended oil drain intervals. Like all recommendations oil change recommendation by the manufacturers is also on the conservative side. In most driving conditions one would not be needed to change the oil more frequently then that recommended by the car manufacturer. Another key point to note is the duration. If manufacturer recommends 10000 km or 1 year for oil change even if one has run the car just about 2000 km in one year it is recommended to change the oil, as oil degenerates with time.

My two cents.

My CRV will go for its 10000 km / 6 month service next month for its first ever oil change.

Oil change is required when the engine oil loses lubrication or it is dirty. It can be dirty in initial days due to metal debris from engine. Otherwise, it will be mostly due to the contamination from the fuel combustion. This rate can be different for different engine conditions, such as well sealed piston rings can prevent contamination. Also engines that burn fuel more efficiently may run longer between oil changes. For example, for a Fiat 1.3 JTD (presumably with good quality diesel), engine oil need not be changed for 30,000 Km. That is not going to work in Indian conditions with Indian diesel quality anyway.

on one of my flights abroad i met an engineer from Mercedes recently, he was telling me that the oil change is the most important thing for a car. He was asking me to change the oil once every 3-4k kms. Is it necessary that often. I own a safari 3.0l Dicor

Are you sure he worked for mercedes and not an Engine oil company.
Actually changing oil at every 100kms is very beneficial..... For the engine oil company

i too doubted it but being a novice on this i thought it is better that i ask fellow Tbhpians. He was also mentioning about never letting the oil go black.
So you say that it is not necessary.
