What the hell.

You run an engine without fuel.
I run with one cylinder less.

Why I get bad gas mileage?

Maybe the gas aint good enough. You should try adding some non-petrol additives like sugar

Btw, your moral counterpart in Bangalore - vid6639, has claimed a 12-13 kmpl average on his newly botoxed 7-yr Lancer.

Official figures are yet to be calculated but that's a rough estimate seeing the gauge.

I generally fill up when the light comes on. filled in 30litres after service. When the indicator comes on it means 12litres are there. The light hasnt come on and car has done close to 340kms.

mag hope i get that figure. If i do I'll buy you dosa.

6. Drive with a steady throttle , dont over revv or keep playing with the throttle unnecessarily ..

8. Or just hire our very own c3po .. He will yell and yell telling you to shift at the right rpm range ..

This sounds funny coming from a 22yr old , this FE thing .. I was expecting you well seasoned guys to let us in on a few secrets to achieve good FE .. Most of you having driven cars since the times we weren't even born ..

hehe am inspired from u and have started drivin carefully...actually today i discovered tht my car can go as low as jus above 2okmph in 5th gear with ac .....maybe its possible bcoz i weigh less thn 1/20th of the car's weight ....will check the FE once more with this drivin habit.....

Hari Rama,

A decent piece of suggestion will be to not overdo this high-gear low-speed practice any lower than required. I'd suggest even following Maruti's/ manufacturer's own guidelines abt gear change will improve your mileage significantly.

The bottomline for such an exercise is to find that minimum engine speed for each gear at which the engine does not feel stressed to pull the car.

apparently a googled link or whatever is proof, as opposed to common sense.
if thats such an amazing theory, you can go ahead and prove it empirically, by staring the car, letting it warm up, and once its on idle ( no accelerataion)
disconnect the fuel line and see if it keeps running

dude, all offense meant, but there is no way an internal COMBUSTION engine, is gonna run without some fuel for the source combustion.
like i said, i dont doubt the figures you get for your car,
but errr, an engine running without any fuel source is not something i'm buying even if i have to listen to elf for the rest of my life as punishment if i'm wrong

in fact sam is gonna gonna kill me for this, but Sam has attempted this theory in his younger days, and apparently even his battered old van refused to run on an empty petrol tank. there are a few people on this forum who will vouch to that
as we have spend more than a few evenings trekking to the closed petrol pump while dressed in our apparent best clothes

Maybe you should look up the differences between running, and deceleration. And really, you should invest in some earplugs, because you're soon going to have elf sitting on your shoulder. For the rest of your life.

I used to do it in india. on my bike (70+ on adreno), scooter (50+ on bajaj super), car (16+ on santro).

but realised it can't be done in a well regulated traffic like US. I can't release the accelerator completely if i foresee a stop half a mile away like i used to do in india. and i can't take forever to get to 40 mph from a green light like i used to do in india.

(more probably, I won't do that again in india since the traffic patterns have changed over the years there too)

small sacrifices for everybody's convenience and safety.

Let's hope your indicator light is working.

Else you too will be running your car without fuel.

maybe i dont need to look it up as i kinds think i may know the difference.
anyway, since you do bring up the topic, i shall quote from mclarens first post

here's and excerpt of the text

""--------------
Just remember shift early where you think there is no excess load on the engine , get into 5th as soon as possible .. Leg off the A pedal in 5th means no fuel being injected at all .. Thats the key to achieving a good FE ..
""--------------

its talks about leg off the accelerator in 5th. thats running buddy, not decelleration.
i already have earplugs, elf lives in the same neigbourhood

Elfy why do you say that? the manual says 12litres when light comes on.

Umm...That would still be deceleration. Deceleration is not only by way of braking. You take the foot off the throttle in 5th, and speed would still drop, just not as quickly as while braking. But then, I'm sure you already knew that.

While I agree that it still is deceleration when we take our foot of the A pedal, I find it hard to believe that the engine is not burning any fuel during such deceleration. The quantity of fuel injected would ofcourse be lesser than what it would be during acceleration, but still a minimum quanity of fuel needs to be injected.
