Hey Rishab ,
I was browsing thru the Porsche Cayenne pics which GTO had uploaded on webshots. In one of the pics of the interior i seen a "Passenger Airbag Off" switch.
Now does this switch really do what I think it does?? Does it deactivate the passenger-side airbag? If yes isnt it dangerous?
If not, what does the switch do??

More in the case of a child in a rear facing safety seat, airbag could break the neck. Preg lady - airbag can be used but dends on hieght / weight of person

hmmm..... ya i never thought of that. Thanks Ajmat.

BTW, what happens to the airbag thats already been inflated. I'm sure the same bag will not be put back. How much does it cost to replace the airbag? Whats the minimum impact speed at which the bags inflate??

To replace a Cayenne Airbag? Probably the cost of an Ikon or two

Also kids tend to sit on the front edge of the seat (without wearing a seatbelt), and being the height that they are, the airbag deploys right at their head and there is a good chance of this breaking their necks.

Keep in mind that airbags infate incredibly fast and are designed to inflate before the person makes contact with it. If they were to "meet" the person half way...it would hurt! Airbags are always labelled SRS Airbag whcih stands for "Supplemental Restraint System" which means its secondary..ie you SHOULD be wearing seatbelts which are your primary restraint system!!

Airbags deploy at a rate anywhere between 50m/s(180km/h) to 110m/s(396km/h). Average speed being arount 65m/s(230km/h)!! So just try and imagine being hit in the face by a firm cussion of air at that speed! (<<im talking about the speed at which the airbag inflates /not the speed at which the vehicle has to be travelling.)

There are some issues with side collision airbags as they do make contact with the person either way...but im not sure what the speeds of those are.....

Some new cars (eg. VW Golf GTi) have sensors in the seatbelt clip/buckle which monitor the seatbelt useage and then choose a velocity at which to deploy the airbag.....

cheers
Rehaan

Why restrict it to cayenne owners? I think every air-bagged car owner on team-bhp needs to look at Rehaans post.
