Default Which is the right Sequence Clutch-Brake Or Brake-Clutch

While slowing down, I normally apply brake and when the car slows down to a level where there is a need to change the gear, press the clutch. But my friend says, he presses clutch before applying brake. He reasons that disengaging the engine from the wheels by pressing the clutch increases the effectiveness of brake, reduces wear on transmission. Which is right? Pressing Clutch before brake or applying Brake before pressing clutch?

You are correct and your friend is absolutely wrong.

Engine braking should be utilised and, of course will not be there with the clutch depressed.

braking shifts the weight of the car forward; engine braking does not do this so much. The clutch should not be depressed until it is necessary to prevent the engine stalling --- aided by changing down as you approach the point where you know you will stop.

Progressive braking is part of this and, as the car comes to a final stop, it will be requiring very little pressure to achieve this: smooth driving, no jerks and comfort for you and your passengers.

The aim is to have full control over the car at all times. Being in the right gear for the right circumstances is part of this. Never, ever coasting, is part of this too.

Sorry... send your friend back to driving school!
