I have a big (6 foot) rat snake lurking around the rain gutter near my office parking spot. I guess that pretty much takes care of rat problem for me.

In addition to a rat snake at the adjacent compound, there are also a couple of cats roaming around my house. I guess thats why I havent had rat attack at home or in the car, for sometime now.

I have tried this and it worked in my old Santro for keeping the rats out..!

There are these car perfume gels (or wax), they come in these can kind of stuff.

The thing to do is, keep some of this gel/wax in the engine bay. Also apply some on the wiring and pipes. Rats hate that smell, they do keep off it.

I give my car for water service once a month. I think the diesel/polish/whatever they spray inside the engine bay keeps rats away. I have never faced this problem so far.

Camphor is flammable.. I guess naphthalene can also catch fire. Not sure though. But naphthalene vapours are poisonous from what I've heard. They can get into the air circulation system.

Diesel has no such issues. Simply clean the engine bay and spray diesel once in two days below the car, on wheels and in engine bay.

Camphor is something which can burn. So its not safe to use anywhere near a heat generation system. wiki gives the flash point for camphor at 64 degree C, so its pretty dangerous to use inside engine bay.

Just went through the thread- real horror story!!

Recently I had bad smell coming out with AC on in my Cruze.

We suspected rats- but no other problem- all lights working, indicator/ warning lamps working, engine working... touchwood! I thought the "poor" guy might have died somewhere in the airduct- so I can withstand the smell till it goes away. But then, later I found that those rotten parts will attract bacteria and cause problem to us as well!

Terrified, I called up my usual servicing guy only to learn they have closed for GM service!! Through my ex-GM connections, got the alternate source and tried arranging a quick service by next week. Fortunately, we were going outstation in the long weekend. (Till then, I never thought of what all problems a "live" rodent could have caused in these 4-5 days)

Ok, to cut a long story short, Trident confirmed that there "was a rat, but no more there" It was only its "leftover" (and poo?) which was causing the smell. They suggested to drop camphor through the air duct opening from the cabin so that the smell "will go away completely in couple of days" and also "put some pepper in the bonnet". I asked him for rat-mesh: but he said "not required".

My mistake: All the talk were over phone only. I could not ask him:
1. From where the rat entered?
2. How to put the pepper? Just take some from our kitchen and put in the bonnet?

Now, keeping my fingers crossed as I await answers/ advice from you

^^well the above method doesn't work for rats in Mumbai, they are almost the size of cats nowadays .On a side note the diesel treatment which I have been following is working fine till date.

Hi Dood
i have a CRUZE AT and am suffering big time with this rodent menace
since the past 1 year
1st they ate up my ABS Lining
2nd they ate up my battery terminals which led into replacement of my battery
3rdly they ate up my light relays which led to replacing the headlights
4thly they have eaten my bonnet insulation packing and rubber

i just don't know what to do
my building is infested with rats and one can't do anything about it so here i am reading the threads yet not found a solution which is 100%

today i found for the 1st time a big rat sitting near the struts
so i am facing a serious issue and if anyone can help

i think the crude being lower it might be easier for them to come inside....

if you have some solution let me know
regards
zain

Having a cat under the car helps my GV avoid rats. Or so I thought. But couple hours back we found a 6ft python just 20ft away from my GV. I think rats are controlled in my office parking lot mainly by a rat snake and python. The python just got thrown out of the job, to a nearby forest.
