Default Swift Petrol - Overdrive

Hey
I have been shifting gears @2800-3200 rpm in my Swift (VXI). Just wanna know what is the ideal rpm for shifting and at what rpm does the car gets in the overdrive mode in 5th gear. Currently i had to go to delhi and my left bearing was damaged so i managed to keep myself to go beyond 100kmph and that too in 5th gear whereas i usually engage the 5th afetr 110kmph.
Usually i get an average of say 12-14kmpl but that day I had 15kmpl. I did not cross the 100kmph mark coz of the bearing humming sound.
Can anyone plz shed some light on what is the optimum rpm for shifting gears in a Swift petrol.

It may sound stupid but the best place to look would be the owner's manual.

The 5th gear IS the overdrive. There isnt a specific overdrive RPM. If you mean what speed you should shift to 5th in, I think swift owners will be able to comment better. A safe guesstimate would be above 50 - 60 kph.

So you drove at 80~100 instead of your regular style of going higher.
If you were shifting to 5th at 110, I assume you take the car to atleast 130.

Your better milage maybe because of this fact itself.
Since you were at 80, your slow down speed up cycles were far lesser.

As pointed out, Swift owners are the best people to answer this question. But let me take a shot.

In the first sentence you are obviously talking about highway driving. I would say that 110 kmph is usually a bit high for shifting to 5th, unless you are driving on a long mildly uphill stretch and want to maintain high speeds. I would target 80-90 kmph on level highway roads, provided I am doing 120+ speeds (usually the case on Expressways). If I am doing 90-100 kmph on level roads, I would shift to 5th at maybe 60-70 kmph. Depends on how hard you want to accelerate. Generally gradual acceleration will give you best FE.

For city driving I would target 50-60 kmph as pointed out by GTO.

If you want to maintain a steady 100kmph, then shift to the 5th at 110. There is no point accelerating when you are on overdrive. this way you reach your speed a lot earlier.

For the best FE, it is recomended to keep the RPM around 2500-3000.

The manual says change gears at 2000 if you want more mileage or at 3000 if you need more power in your drive.. Changing to 5th at 110!! I agree swift wont complain nor there is sound change from the engine if you are driving at 100+ in fourth gear, but i change to 5 just after 70 if i can see a long empty stretch ahead of me..

As per Maruti you should change the gears as given below for the best mileage. This will have to be adjusted a little after switching on the A/C.

1st to 2nd @ 10 kms/hr
2nd to 3rd @ 20 -25 kms/hr
3rd to 4th @ 30 - 35 kms/hr
4th to 5th @ 40 - 45 kms/hr

you can shift to OD as and when the speedo needle is at 60 km/hr! My Swift runs comfortably in OD above 55km/hr! The FE figure what you are getting with out using OD appropriately is amazing!
Generally FE increases as and when the car runs as much as in OD!!

Hey bblost
Firstly, Yes!, i drove below 100kmph coz of the bearing problem. I usually drive @ 140-155kmph on CHD-DEL highway. Secondly, my post was not pertaining to the FE, if you read it thru. I wanna know if there is an optimum RPM rate (The manual has no info) for shifting. Thanx for your reply, i appreciate that.

Hey @pjbiju the figures you've stated are for people who want their cars to take them from 1 place to another. When you intend to have a serious conversation with your car you have to push the envelope. My shifting ordder is as follows:

1 to 2nd @ 2800 rpm appx 25-30 kmph
2nd - 3rd @2800 rpm appx 40-50 kmph
3rd - 4th @3000 rpm appx 70-80 kmph
4th - 5th @ 3200 rpm appx 110-135 kmph

and still i get a FE of 14-16kmpl on the highway and in the city it is 10-12kmpl.

once in a month i take the rpm needle till the mark before the redline at all the gears.

This info that is displayed at all MASS applies to 800/Alto and not to Swift/SX4. Shifting to 5th gear at 45 KM/h even for the sake of FE is not a wise, practical idea.

I have consiously tried shifting gears this way, and the engine never struggled on flat stretches with one or two adults in the car. But in real life driving (where I do not look at the RPM/Speedo dials before shifting gears), the gear shifting occurs at higher speeds for each gear - something like 50-60 kmph for the 5th gear.

I dont know how you mange this in the swift?Tried driving the swift in 5th gear at 50kmph and there was a traffic pile up behind as even if the vehicle ahead accelerated a little and i jabbed teh accelerator there was no response at all and i had to downshift 2 gears into 3rd.
Similar for the 996 cc mpfi zen.No low end torque. On a trip to mahabaleshwar yesterday had to constantly down shift and rev the engine for overtaking.Although it was fun to take her to high rpms but then mileage gets affected.
