Default Re: Tata Indica - List Of Problems

Since last 1 month , my indica dlx ( with R14) is showing reduced braking capability and the distance to stop has increased.
I am suspecting a few reasons :
- less brake fluid ( cant see the bottle since its behind the intercooler), so needs topping
- Needs bleeding for all brakes
- needs a brake pad change since the odo is at 35K with the original brake shoes.

Pls advise on which order I should proceed to check ther brake condition and rectify ...servicing of car is put on hold owing to my schedule till mid oct.

Also, may be a silly query .,,i am not sure how many brake pads I need to change , all 4 or only the rear ones with drum? Will buy the Bosch / TVS one if available.

Also, saw the price of Mobil Delvac MX 5L @ 1565 mrp in Pune, got it at 1440/-. Is it a good price or I have paid more this time?
Thanks,

Hi Amazing, I have a '03 Indica V2 DLS done 56k and faced similar issues with brakes. Does your brake pedal go all the way in when coming to a standstill? Check for brake oil leakages, as the master cylinder gasket was cracked due to which there was air in the system.

You will have to check the conditions of the brake pads physically before replacing, I doubt its the brake pads.

I have used the same Mobil delvac at my last oil change (15 days back) got the can for Rs.1350/- without any bargain in Thane.

The major reason for reduced braking capability is the useful braking surface of the brake pads being consumed. And since you have already covered 35K on your original brake pads, this would be the right time to replace them. Even I replaced my original brake pads at 35K kms. I don't think brake fluid level would have gone down considerably if there are no leakages. Bleeding is required only at the time when you replace your brake fluid & atmospheric air gets trapped in the brake lines, which needs to be bled out.

Most probably you will need to change the front brake pads (2 per wheel). I have changed the front ones twice till date (99+K kms & 7.4 years). Will go for the rear brake shoe replacement at the 100K service.

Thanks,
This comes out to 288/- to a litre, which is fair enough. In April I had bought 15W40 Diesel Engine Oil - 4 ltr (Castrol GTD) for 920/- which is 230/- to a litre.

Thanks Autoindian and Maverick5490 for quick response. So, I will get the brake pad inspected and also before hand buy 2 sets of Bosch/ TVS pads. Also, will get the brake oil level checked by the garage guys since I am unable to reach that brake liquid bottle behind intercooler.

Just another help from you please, I have seen a few 'Castrol Car Care' shops in Wakad/ Hinj also. Any experience as to how good are they in case of replacing Oil, filters, Brake pads and cleaning of Cat cons.

Or can you suggest some good private workshops in PCMC/ Hinj area for above work ?

@ Maverick- the mrp of this new can , pkd 08-11 , was 1565. One shop quoted 1500/, other one 1440/-. Both did not have older stocks.

Many thanks.

I had done my 90K oil change service outside TASC, from Lucas TVS (Near KSB Pump chowk), since I wanted to club it with my Starter Motor overhaul. You can refer message #22 from my ownership thread below.

Let me check if Lucas works on Saturday and will go with Beru & replace the full set, since as you say its the number of ignitions in this period rather than the distance covered.
^^ Changed the entire set with Bosch, could not source Beru. Lucas service were not too co-operative, they did not have the glow plugs in stock and also indicated that they were not taking up the service jobs anymore

Ok ,Bosch ones cost 1.3K, and replacement at FNG for Rs.120/-

Default Tata Indica Meters not working

SS Traveller

New problem so query for you. I've been having this for the past few months. Every morning when I start the car, the meters (Tach, Speedo & odo) don't work for a while. Then they suddenly start to function. Before that they kind of flash (at the odometer) but the needle don't work. I always put it down to moisture. Now during this monsson I had the car in a closed garage, plenty of rains and hence moisture. Now the meters don't work at all, even the dash boad light isn't coming on.
Thought I 'd check if you have any idea beforr I go to an electrician.
Regards

These are not mechanical (cable-driven) meters AFAIK, and the malfunction is probably related to a loose contact somewhere - either in a fuse, or one or more sensor(s) going bad. Since all meters as well as dashboard light have gone kaput together, I'd suspect a fuse issue (or a break in the wiring) somewhere.

You do need to go to that electrician!

Your right I will get it checked out.
But I need to be wise or else they may change a fuse and tell me it was a chip or a PCB.
Cheers

hi guys...I've confronted a new problem in my vista :( whenever I'm putting the car in the reverse gear it is giving a jerk, and rest of the gears 1-5 are fine no jerk at all. What can be the problem with it...?

Hi Rahul, are you moving your car (releasing the clutch pedal) as soon as you slot into reverse. If that is the case then you might experience the jerk (or rather some metal grinding noise). Once you slot the reverse, hold it there for a couple of seconds (2-3 at least), so that it engages properly (same should have been mentiond in your car manual as well). Then slowly release the clutch. Check out if this makes any difference. Also drive another Vista (friend's or a TD vehicle) & see if there is any remarkable difference. Do post your findings.

thanks for the help I get the jerk without touching the throttle. It feels just as i shift to reverse in stationary position after ignition. One thing new i found that after running few kms it, at times it stops behaving that way and gear shift get smoothly.

secondly one issue is evident since when i bought my vista, that when i switch off the engine, it shuts off with a slight jerk and it feels at rear. dont know whether this is a problem or its usual with all Vista QJDs.

Hi,

I recently brought a used Indica from a close friend who had clocked 34k km, Car is in very Good condition, recently did a Bangalore-Mysore-Coorg-Mysore-Bangalore Trip and clocked till date to 36k km, last service was done at 29k km by my friend, i wish to get it serviced now, please help me with following questions.

1. All previous services were done at 10k km interval except the first one (1k km), can i now switch to semi-synthetic? (fully synthetic is expensive), car still has extended warranty, will i void warranty if i switch to semi-synthetic ? if not recommend me a good brand and grade oil spec. Also those who had used semi-synthetic please post your experience in Indica TCIC engines, any reduction in engine noise, mileage improvement etc.

2. If i am using Semi-synthetic, do i require engine flush ?

3. If i am sticking to mineral oil, will engine de-carbonization be helpful in anyway ?
i did for my petrol swift and i hardly found any difference.

4. I know the general things that needs attention in this service like Fuel filter replacement, air filter change etc, what are the other things that i need to tell TATA guys.

5. I see there are some power steering oil leakage near the filler cap and its hose, should i replace this oil and some other items ?

Thanks
John

Why do you want to get it serviced now? Wait until the regular 40K service wherein you have to change not just the engine oil, but gear box oil, coolant & brake oil.

There is no point in going for synthetic oil, rather stick to regular mineral oil. The cost of synthetic oil is not worth the benefits it provide. You would be better off replacing your mineral oil at lesser intervals (say 5K km). This would keep the engine & your pocket happy. I have been using Castrol GTD 15W40 & that has given me good results.

Decarb is just hogwash, never ever go for it. You can go for engine flushing at say 50K kms. Refer the post #8 in my ownership thread --> http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-t...ms-beyond.html

Is there a drop in the PS oil level. If not then nothing to worry, just wipe off the leaked oil & observe for a couple of days. As per regular maintenance the PS oil needs to be replaced at 80K kms.
