In the last few days , I have observed in my Indica Turbo D, that while I am using the AC in 'coolest position' with even blower at position '4', the cooling is not upto the mark at all. This is the case while driving around 11-3 PM day peak time with oustside temp at 37C.

Well this is in comparison to the cooling I used to get earlier and I feel its much lower now.

Till now I have never touched the AC /related parts in last 4 years of the car ( bought in 2008 new). So, i want your expert opinions if there is any DIY which I can do to improve the cooling efficiency:

- Cleaning or changing of any filter , which is easily acccessible by me. Need location of that filter.
- Water cleaning of any coil etc. by the local wash guy that might improve the cooling.

And if you feel I need to take to A$$ or any local garage (AC specialist) who can improve without getting into the loop of gas refill/ condenser change etc

Pls help since I am using the AC daily now and so need a effective cooling of AC working under mid day sun.

Amazing, since you have posted the same query in my ownership thread I have replied back in that thread (message #104). Pasting below the link for your quick reference.

Issues in Car till date :

Indica Xeta 1.2 GLG , 4 yr old , 31000 Kms

1. Starter motor problem in around 8 months. Car did not start and was towed to Concorde motors. The starter motor was repaired in warranty and till today there was no problem

2. After couple of years ,Central Lock was not working and was not covered in warranty and had to shell out around 3K.

3. June 2011 - Battery needed replacement and went for Amaron for 3.8K.

4. Around the same time , I was hearing a weird noise from front left suspension and I ignored and kept driving.
Oct 2011 , the issue was diagnosed with bearing issue in suspension and was changed in Concorde motors for 6K.

5. From around 30K in the odo the tyres were pretty bad and needed immediate attention.

6. Last month onwards the engine noise was pretty bad and I knew there was a serious issue.

31K Service Report:

My initial thought was to sell this car and go for new car but for various reasons I thought I would have this car for minimum another year and hence went for a detailed service.

1. From Team- Bhp I knew I had to take my car to Ignite , Chennai. Called up Raghav and spoke with him. He told to get the tyres changed first so he can do the other service

2. Initially planned to change my tyres with Raja Tyres ( XM1+ with new rims). Not very happy with various reasons and I moved on to Tyrestore.

3. Initial thought was to wait for XM2 but possible delay and my service needs took priority and went ahead with XM1+ .Total Cost Rs 13 K for 4 tryes and 3K for new OE rims.

4. 04th April dropped my car with Ignite and picked up 6th April evening . The following were the issues and the solution

a. Noise was due to Alternator Assembly and needed complete reconditioning at Rs 4k
b. Power Steering Pump also gave way and this also contributed to the noise. New Replacement at Rs 8K.

Till now there is no concrete reason on the background / causes for this issues. Raghav of Ignite could not give me a proper explanation also.

c. Hatch Door Shocks replaced at Rs 1K

d. Gear Lever - Reconditioning and other minor niggles.

e. A/C Gas recharge at Rs 1.5K

Total Cost - Rs 16300

Total Cost spent for 31K service over last couple of days Rs 32K.

Other unresolved Issues

1. Mileage : One of my major concern till date was the mileage. In City conditions with A/C always on, I get around 9-10 Km/l. I do not know if this is related to my driving style ( don't mistake me for rash driving) or because of the car.

After all these service and tyre change, I made a conscious decision to check and change my driving style ( not riding clutch, gear change pattern, reduction in A/C etc).

Couple of Days back on the Chennai - Pondy (Via Thindivanam ) , mileage with 50% AC and max speed of 90kmph , the mileage was 17.7kmpl. Other sections with traffic and 100% AC, the mileage was around 13.5 kmpl

2. Head Light alignment. My right head light is more focused towards the left. It is uncomfortable during night drives but none of them have resolved this issue or even find a cause for it.

I guess I have to live with these issues till I have this car.

Hello Marlon, the age & running of your car is certainly not that much so as to warrant such type of issues. Though I won't dare to say that you have landed up with a lemon, because even I have faced many of the issues that you have faced, your issues are by no means small or niggles & these are major problems.

Even I faced the starter issue, but then it was not a breakdown, car just refused to start when the engine was very hot (temperature needle at half way mark). Got it overhauled directly at Lucas TVS, cost Rs 3K

My central locking conked off within a week of me getting the car delivered as it could not withstand the heavy downpour in Mumbai. Fortunately I got it replaced under warranty, no issue with CL whatsoever for the last 8 yeas.

I replaced my OEM Exide with Exide MHD70 Heavy Duty Express after 4 years & 3 months after 43K kms

That is quite an amount. Was the whole suspension changed or just the bearing?

I replaced my OEM tyres at 62.3K kms. I believe your issue with bearing/suspension might have lead to the premature wear of the tyres

Mine are also XM1+ on alloys (5 tyres + 5 alloys) 13.5K + 13.5K, done 48K kms on the new set

That is too huge a cost for 31K service. I too had some major repairs/replacements. Alternator serviced @ 40K kms for Rs 2K, then leaking fuel tank replaced @ 87K kms for Rs 5.5K.

I think that is a decent mileage for a petrol Indica. You can't do much to improve on that. However your maintenance costs are already very high & in future if they would be heading northwards you would be better off disposing off your car.

Hi Marlon,

Thanks for the details. I have a wish-list to write a 4 year 28K experience log for my Xeta GLS 1.2 pending on me. I have loved every bit of last 4 years and car has proved to be "More Car, per Car" so far. Hope I get some time to share details. I just saw few charges in your list that I checked/paid today:

- Hatch door shocks at a spare part dealer was at around 350-400 Rs for Indica. TASS charged you too much...way too much. There is no rocket science in those shocks. Just check at any nearby Spare-part guy and than ask those who are taking your hard-earned bucks at the name of trust.

- Today, I also learned that going to a TASS once you are done with your "Free Services" may be a idea. Why, I also got AC checked with them. (ACE Motors, Gurgaon). I will definitely upload the bill but here is a summary:

1. AC Gas R12 -0.6 kg - INR 1538.2
2. Compressor Oil Deno-6 -0.35 kg - INR 371.26
3. AC Relay - 1 each - INR 510.06
4. AC Gas Refilling R134/A - - INR 500
& Electric Labour charges

I also got Tappet gasket replaced which was:

5. Gasket - 1 each - INR 464.09
6. Anabond - 25 gm - INR 61.88
7. Tappet packing Change - - INR 400
Labour charges

After all the taxes and VAT, I ended up paying INR 4,345 Rs. I swear this was my last time at TASS. I will connect with fellow BHPians from Gurgaon to found a place where work is done clean and nice with some sensible charges. Work done at this TASS was pathetic. I can still see old adhesive sticked around the Tappet, I can see that after charging 500 Rs, they didn't even properly washed the AC Evaporator cleaning. When I asked, they said they did clean it with water but I was able to see the muck there.

Anyways, I can see similar expensive trends in your bill so please try to find another better and economical alternative near by.

Cheers,
Dharmesh

Please go ahead & share with us your long term ownership experience. It would be interesting to read & beneficial for fellow Indica owners. I started my thread after I joined TBHP, well after 6 years & 80K kms on my Indica, but it was all worth the wait.

Is ACE Motors, Gurgaon a TASC? If yes & if you are outside warranty, then why didn't you try a private garage, where the part & labour charges would have been cheaper & you could have got the work done to your satisfaction. Another question were you facing any issues with your AC, I mean ineffective cooling etc? Did you get the AC gas pressure checked before got it refilled?

Many thanks for your response Deepak Ji. I stumbled upon the brilliant excel log you maintain for your car. That is a superb log of all the details, very inspiring in fact. I am definitely going to write about excellent experience so far I had from this lovely IndianCar...this sweetheart is truly a "More Car per Car"

Yes, I used to get my car serviced at another TASC (Gurgaon Car Scanner) in Gurgaon who have pampered my car every time with love and care. And the charges they made always made me just smile as almost always it used to be less than what I would have estimated. I had major comfort level there as head mechanic is from hometown in Himachal. However, this time when I had above mentioned issues in my car, I wasn't able to get it resolved there because they were busy (they are always overloaded with work probably due to the excellent customer care and reasonable charges). I just thought to try ACE Motors who is also a TASC and nearer to my home. Honestly speaking, I am not impressed with the way they handled the car. I was still able to see dust in AC Duct and on condenser even though they told me they have cleaned them properly. But yesterday and today I really felt the strong cooling performance by car AC. AC was functioning well till 2 weeks back when suddenly it stopped to start. I know there is a pressure interlink which will not allow compressor to run if gas pressure is low (to protect AC Compressor) so I got it checked by my favorite TASC. They checked the pressure and said gas has leaked.

And since you belong to city I love from heart (though from Himachal....from 2003 onward, I have either stayed in Pune or out of India, this is first time I am working in North India). I was with Alfa Laval (Dapodi) before leaving India and when I came back, I was with PRAJ (Bavdhan). I bought my car from B.U. Bhandari Pashan. I will post some lovely photos of my car, you will like the detailing done

Take care and stay in touch.

In my Indica V2 Turbo DLX. 4 year old car , 39K on odo I am recently facing a new problem. I need your expert opinion.

I was driving with AC on in mid day sun , with family and was cruising at 50-60 kmph, witth rpm showing around 1400-1500 range. Suddently there were spurts in rpm meter showing as 1900 ( car still cruisng the same way) and I could hear the increased engine noise/rev. After some 5-8 secs, it comes down to normal 1400 range.

Even this happens in idling condition at signals. Its normally ( AC off mode) at 950 rpm , sometimes it shoots upto 1100 ..stays there, till car is started and may be later it comes down.

I am worried if this is not the indication of some bigger issue in the engine or something else.

Before I take it to the TASC, i just need your opinions so that they wont take me for a ride by changing some costly parts etc.

Thanks for your compliments. You can use that worksheet to fill in the details of your car & each time you look back at that sheet you should feel very satisfied.

Autoindian, Thanks.

But it happens in w/o AC condition also, when I am standing in signal [ window down, waiting in signal ] ...idle rpm goes at 1100- 1200 , but most times it is at 970 rpm.

Is it also because of the same issue with FICD ? Just to be sure.

It could be one of the reasons. The FICD comes into play only when the AC is switched on & the plunger pulls the idling cable to increase the idling rpm. It could be that the FICD solenoid is getting a false signal. If the rpm fluctuation is very random & more wild, it could also be a faulty regulator in the alternator. Best is to visit the nearest Lucas TVS to diagnose & fix this issue.

Default Re: Tata Indica - List Of Problems

Friends need guidance for my Indica Turbo Dlg 2006 I have three problems

I had bought this car at 58k 6 month back and presently at 64k+

This was the first time I got it to highway 450 kms one way with 2 adults, me and my wife in back with kids.

1>I faced problem with AC

AC as such is very fine working even when at idle waiting in car absolute chilling but I realized that after 90KMph the AC became very less effective with frequent complaint from my wife in back but it regains normal cooling below 90kmph. What could be the cause? Also I have noted that there is a frequent relay sound from driver side like "tak tak" once every 1 or 2 mins when AC is on (probably something to do with RPM as I have felt it)

2> My vehicle makes sound and vibration from 2600 to 3100 rpm with peak at 2950-3000 RPM. i can feel vibrations even in all pedals. SO driving at speed from around 103-118 KMPH becomes entirely irritating. This vibration is present in all gears. I had changed one engine mount and other bushes when I bought car but not much difference

3> while going my car gave 18+ milage with AC and some spirited driving. but on return average fell to 15. I regularly use System D but it finished few refill back so while going it was normal diesel but i bought one bottle and while coming back i used 40ml for tank full. Engine became smoooooth but the average went down, driving condition were almost same. Is it due to System D??

Gurus please guide

Default Re: Tata Indica - List Of Problems

1. I was told by a mech that if the engine starts to overheat/overload, the AC is cut off. I also found my AC not working , but at 3000+ RPM at 110+ speeds.
I was told its a noise by some gear which switches the mechanism between recirculation and outside air. despite many complaints, and the tasc attempting to fix it, it never really has gone away. I've become used to it these days
2. had the same problem for a long time, turned out it was improperly worn out tyres/bent/unbalanced rims. I recently changed my tyres to tubeless and switched to new rims, and this has gone away. For the time being, try alignment and balancing and see if it helps. if that doesnt work, have a look at the suspension and tie rods. worst case it might be the tyres/bent rims, in which the best you can do is try rotating them and wait until you get a fresh set.
3. No clue. 18+ is astounding. the best I've gotten is 17ish, and in the city i get 12~13.
