HI AutoIndian, I got the filter changed at 30K not 40K as mentioned in my earlier post. It did not warrant a change but i did so anyway. Got it checked again at 40K... is good! I guess I must try driving at very conservative speeds for a few days and check. Is the Tdi Turbo really a turbo. Or is that Intercooler just an Interfooler? I dont really get the kinda pick up I got when i drove an Indica (Not Vista) Turbo (2007-8 i think).

yup its a turbo allright, but the whoosh feeling from the turbo gradually deteriorates until its no longer there. All the mechs I talked to said that this happens to all tata vehicles :(

The whoosh feeling is due to the Turbo Boost which the engine gets after 2000 RPM. Now to compensate for the boost pressure the FIP gives more fuel. This is controlled by the Boost Pressure device on the FIP. There is a air pipe which connects the inlet manifold and the FIP. The banjo bolt on the inlet manifold gets clogged with carbon which restricts the air flow to the boost pressure device on the FIP due to which the FIP fails to deliver more fuel when needed.

The Banjo Bolt is just below the Intercooler as shown on the picture. Get it cleaned and the car should be back to normal.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone help me out with the wiring diagram of the indica diesel. I am wanting to install a start button to the car but am not able to get the drawings from tata and the local mechanic doesn't seem to be too helpful either. I want to use the button to start the car for the cool effect. There are five cables on the steering hub, but i don't know which is which. Can anyone help and ho i don't have a multimeter.

Thanx a lot.

Two seperate issues.

1. The check engine light stays on for some time after starting in the morning (doesn't happen in the afternoon or evening) Any idea?
2. In the morning, every time I reverse, I hear a 'snap' sound from the back of the car. I thought it was because i was driving over something, but it turns out there is nothing there, and its happening everyday. What could it be? I'm suspecting some rust in the rear brakes because I have to drive through a fairly deep pool of mud to reach home these days.

How much time is "some time"? Have you checked all fluid levels (engine oil, Power Steering oil, brake oil etc? If not please check & make sure all are at the recommended levels.

Is the sound appearing only while reversing the car? If it does not appear when you are moving forward, then nothing to do with the rear brakes, something might be wrong with the reverse gear engagement, which is very common in Indicas.

okay, a few clarifications. some time = anywhere between 5 to 30 seconds.
the snap noise happens only once - when I back out of my garage. Will try going moving forward first for a change tomorrow. The thing is that the noise comes from behind and sounds like it comes from outside the car. if it was the gearbox, it would be from below/front right ?

I think couple of seconds should not be cause of much concern. Can you try one thing? When you start the car in the morning, don't move immediately. Let the car idle for some time. If required give a gentle push to the accelerator pedal (while the car is idling) & see if the check engine light vanishes. It could be that the oil pump is taking some time to build enough pressure in the crank case & hence the check engine light initially (this is just a guess & I am no expert)

Ok assuming that you have correctly guessed the source of that sound, are you sure you are disengaging the hand brake completely. It might be a case wherein even though the handbrake lever is completely pressed down, the brake shoes are not released completely (could be due to loose handbrake cable). Try engaging & releasing the handbrake a couple of times & observe if you get the same snap noise each time.

The sound from the back seems to have stopped, but the CEL is still coming on. I noticed that before starting, there was a ticking sound coming, just like the sound from the indicators. I traced it down to the front, and it was coming from the blue Glow plug/Solenoid valve (GPR & VSV) controller.

Indica DLS 50K Km, having issues with the AC. Got it serviced i.e. cooling coil, blower motor externally cleaned and refrigerant reloaded. Cooling was ok but the AC condensor fan was not switching on. The local mechanic says that it is jammed and needs to be replaced. Any idea how much should it cost - have heard from 1600 to 2500 (TASC). Have been running without replacing the AC condensor fan, the temperature needle stays where it should. Is it ok to run like this or should i get the condensor fan replaced pronto?

Hey guys

I have a 2008 indica xeta and its got a funny problem. If I fill a full tank, OR I am climbing a ghat or doing a curve at high speed, sometimes there is a sudden stench of petrol in the cabin. It stays for a few mins while I keep the windows open and then its ok!

The service centers haven't been of much help and say all hoses are ok. Does anyone else have this issue or know what causes it???

Thanks in advance!

A friend's Indica Xeta (Petrol) has this issue with the power steering assembly - the oil has leaked from the assembly and the steering makes a grinding noise when turned, we took it to a TASC and were told that the entire steering rack needs replacement as the oil leakage cannot be rectified by replacing the oil seal. The assembly costs some 14k Rupees (Rane make)and labour charges are extra.
I wanted to know if anyone has replaced just the steering rack oil seal and is happy with it.

The TASC is usually not equipped to work on the Steering Assembly. Atleast for me, they have consistently mentioned that they would need to send it to the Rane center for issue diagnosis/work.

The quote the TASC usually mentions is an average cost. For the Diesel Indica, it is 17 K for replacement & lesser amounts for lesser issues (which is usually not known until Rane engineers check the assembly).

I had recurring leakage issues recently (on my ~10 yr old Indica) which was eventually fixed by a friendly neighborhood mechanic on my umpteenth visit. I went to the extent of flatly refusing the replacement as I have plans to dispose the same by Feb 2013 (10 yr anniversary). I even suggested a M-Seal application on the outside of the assembly from where the leakage occurred. Incidentally a connecting pipe was the culprit & was fixed.

While all the above was happening over a 4 month period, I lived by refilling the Power Steering liquid on a weekly/on demand basis. (Hope you got the hint & how un-desperate I looked to the mechanic eventually forcing him to relook.)

Do request your friend to get a second opinion. Too many things cause the leak on a Indica (Pun unintended)

There will be no problems other than that you will have lesser cooling @ low speeds or when the car is stationary. You could buy a repaired 2nd hand condensor fan for 800-1000 Rs in local market. Or force your mechanic he will get the same repaired.

I recently changed the condensor fan of my indica (completed 110k kms and 10 years) . The original behr condensor fan costed me Rs.1490 while local ones were available for around 800 - 850 Rs. , but my electrician suggested me to get the original one only. Non functional condensor fan reduces cooling and the compressor used to cut off very early leading to reduced cooling especially in city driving as there is not much flow of air through the condensor. Please change it otherwise it will make the radiator fan work overtime to keep the engine cool.
