i think mainly for diesels since they get a lot of carbon deposit.

I have seen the same treatment being done to an Indicab at the place where i get my car washed. Initially, i was stunned, later curiousity took the better of me, and i stayed to watch the tamasha.

Funny part is it works quite well lol, but easier way is to occasionally have a high rpm run and then just clean the end pipes after some normal running. Good for the engine also

The theory was that the water would explode into high-pressure steam during combustion, & dislodge the carbon deposits !
srini,
I thought water and engine just werent supposed to be together ....I mean doesnt it defy logic? What are the advantages of this decarbonizing? smoke becomes less blacky???

Thanks Torqueguru, something strange that I come to know for the first time. Is the same treatment given by all the authorised service centres or is it done by the general service stations.
Could be a quick workaround thats only practised in India
