Default Compressor problem

Hi everybody,
I am having MFPI ZEN 2002 LXI model, I have this problem for last one year and its still not solved,I do hope one of you guys do help me on this.

When i put on my AC the CAR gets a drag feel, over that there is a continous noise comming from my compressor which can be heard even inside the car with all window closed and there is small amount of vibration along with it. I have shown to number of service people all have said that the compressor need to be changed. I have no problem with its cooling but only the noise, To change the compressor I have to shell out 12000-Rs. or i have to repair the compressor for which there is no surety that the noise will go. some have even said that due to the cars age the noise is bound to come.My car has done 54000 KM. I would appreciate if any one have simillar problem and where in mumbai i can get it done, I stay in Borivali area, Regarding the drag feeling I know its commen in ZEN but is any way that can be reduced by changing the compressor or the drag feeling is due to faulty bearing that ia with the compressor.
I also went to Sai service in borivali to get original wheel caps for my car and i was suprised to know that they do not keep ole zen's wheel caps, need info on where i would get original wheel caps in borivali, also I have to change my rims ,Please help

I would recommend that you live with this. Even with repairs, there is no guarantee about its effectiveness.

When it does conk off, shop around and you would definitely be able to buy a compressor for much less. There are 2-3 companies making the compressor and supplying as OEM to Maruti. Buy it from their dealers. Dont buy from Maruti.

Was your car a victim of floods ever?If yes,it could be that the compressor bearing is the culprit.I can only suggest that you show this to a trusted A/C mechanic.I am sure Mumbai has plenty of competent angels.

As regards the wheel caps,I suggest you go to a accessories stockist in South/Central Mumbai for MGA wheel caps .You will get a set of four for approx. Rs.750 . You could also try KT(Kuan Tong) wheel caps from Taiwan..they look good and are reasonably priced

are you sure its compressor sound, zens are notorious for water pump whine very noticeable at ac idle (raised idle). Again the ac radiator fan will also make some noise.

i suggest if its minor noise dont bother, coz i would also recommend to go for a new comp unit rather than trying to repair it. AC comp is one of those things that never becomes perfect after repair, atleast in my experience.

No my car was not a victim of floods. The compressor's piston is the culprit and thats why the need to change, I have not changed it as I have no problem with its cooling. But the drag feeling is killing me

Change the compressor. If you keep using it the compressor clutch may also need to be replaced (if its not already reached that stage) and that will cost you atleast 2-3K more.

Compressor overhaul+ bearing change will cost 7000rs, and this problem will come again after 30000kms or so of running.
Changing compressor is the only option, or you can wait till the compressor completely dies.

dont go for compressor change. u can first go to workshops where they repair only AC's, they are specialists for AC compressors. they can fix ur problem or will recommend change if necessary.

Let me put my problem in other way. I start my car, and then put on the AC, there is a continous noise just like a electric motor, then i put the car in motion and there is this drag feeling on the car as if there is another car that is being pulled by my car, the drag feeling is so much that even i press down the acc the car keeps crawlling and then after some time the car picks up. the compressor noise remain the same throught the drive.

HI ,

A compressor service will definitely not set you back by 7000 rs . max cost would be around 3000 rs . You can also get a brand new compressor for around 6000 rs . Esteem and 800 also have the same compressor ,but a different evaporator . So you can actually swap a 800 or esteem compressor .

cost of parts are as follows

bearing -250
cluth coil -275
clutch - 300-600
facing the clutch rotor - 50
changing the pistons -each piston costs around 200

The noise that you are getting might be due to the worn out bearing and not the pistons .If the bearing is worn out , it might just rub with the body of the clutch coil and cause sound . just change the bearing , I also think the bearing might need a reseating bush .

I guess the repairs might cost a max of 500 rs plus gas filling .

Default Are you sure it is the compressor?

How does it run with the AC turned off? Some here have written posts saying that these cars are notorious for water pump noise. Does the vehicle still "drag" with the AC off?

It certainly sounds like you have a moving part, bearing, about to seize up. You are lucky to get this warning. Bad bearings turn into non-functioning bearings very quickly. If you ignore it you will break down on the road soon. Then you will not be a happy camper.

With my AC off the car is a dream to drive and very much zippy, only when i put on the AC the drag is there.
Regarding the bearing part, I have shown the problem to Sai services people they say that the bearing is OK its the compressor piston that is causing the problem.

while they were at it , DID they try lubricating the pistons with compressor oil and rotating the crankshaft to check for the source of the problem ?

My advice would be to check at another outlet .
