Well, I've already crossed 46000 kms on my WagonR and the original brakes are still good.

13.5K for a manual brake pad seems early. As far as I remember, I changed brake pads on Corsa 1.4 at 35K. For automatic Corolla, perhaps brake pads wear out early, and I had to change them at 20K. Could have gone another 1-2 K with that, but noise at somewhat tight braking was coming even at around 18K. So 17-22K for my A/T Corolla.

That is what has happened in his case too Dan, only the fronts have worn out prematurely & in any case his car does not have all-around Discs, it's equipped with drums in the rear.

When he says all 4 pads, he means the four pads fitted on the front (2 for each disc).

heavy traffic will not wear out the pads much. the speeds never build up to a level where the wear and tear is accelerated.

driving too fast on the highway will eat up the brakes quicker.

my brakes last 20-25k usually. in my current car, aiming for 40k(yeah! right!)

Usually, brake pads will last anywhere between 25K to 40K. The earliest change I have seen is on my C in the higher 20K mark. Brake pad wear depends on your driving style (aggressive?) and whether you use engine braking or not. Automatics eat up their brakes faster for obvious reason.

Do remember to have your brake pads checked at each service. Running the car when the pads have worn out can significantly damage your brake disc.

At 27k my baleno has lost it sharpness in braking. The pads still show some life in it. The disk seems well bedded and with no scratches. Am at a loss on what to do. How much does OE replacement pads costs for baleno?

Definitely there is something wrong in the free return sliding path of your brake pads. Have the free sliding motion checked or else your fresh set of pads are not going to last you any better. If you drive exclusively in the city do not expect it to last more than 50k. I use it mainly for highway drive and seldom use the brakes. For city use I have the Junkinidica whose brake pads I change every 30k.
Also make sure that your rear brakes are working properly as they are supposed to take about 30% of the braking load.
Agree there. Also depends a lot on driving style. Brakes on my last car, a 309GLD looked almost new after 40000KM

My NHC has done 60,000 KM and still on original brake pads.
Pads checked during every service till date.

NHC manual says that as brake pads wear out, they will start making a screeching sound that will continue to increase progressively and can be distinctly identified from the occasional screech....No signs of this yet. Disks are in perfect shape.
