Question I am facing strange issue with my car AC?

I am having some strange issue with my carís AC. When car is turned on and its stand still with AC on the AC cooling is not much, but when the car is on move the AC cooling is more.

Has anyone faced same kind of issue? What might be causing this issue?

Default Engine RPM and A/C cooling

Considering all a/c components are functioning quite ok, all car a/c systems cool better when engine RPM is at optimum level (like 2000+). Which would explain better cooling when car is running.

But to check, is there a need to top up refrigerant - have you done it recently?

hope this helps.

I suspect a thing with your battery or alternator. When did you last get your battery topped / charged or installed ?

Vinay, the AC system is short on refrigerant. Do get it topped up.

Check if your radiator fan is working when you switch on the AC.It should come on in 10-20 seconds. If there are 2 radiator fans only the one connected to the AC system will come on.

If the fan is working correctly you might have a minor leak in the AC system,it will need to be rectified and the AC refrigerant replaced.

check with the fan if its functioning or not. do you have a separate fan for cooling down the refrigerant? other than the radiator's.

A few possible causes :

- Low refrigerant (as mentioned above)
- Condensor fan not turning on (as mentioned above)
- Compressor belt slipping
- Low voltage (this would affect the blower speed, but im sure you would notice this in other areas as well / first)

Hi Vinay,

This is a classic symptom of a weak compressor. What is happening is the compressor does not pump whilst idling or at low revs resulting in no cooling. The same ca be repaired temporarily. For the long term am afraid you will have to change your compressor.

Thank you guys, I will go to an AC technician and get it checked.

@ Viper: please can you let me know how much does a compressor cost?

I started noticing this issue from past 3 weeks, I will not use the AC on my regular drive, but when driving with family I prefer it to work.

Battery was replaced in Feb 2005

Refrigerant has never been topped up.

Compressors of Honda Citys usually good for 50000km

There is supposed to be someone in Vasantnagar who is quite good. Some bylane left of Miller 56 - go there rather than Honda

Looks like more of Condenser Fan issue than the compressor, when your car is stationary & if that fan doesn't pull out enough air from condenser the cooling gets effected, but when you are in motion there is enough air coming from front air dam to cool off, its acting just like your radiator fan. Get it checked with a competent A/C guy & also get check the pressure inside the cooling pipes, you might need to top up the refrigerant.

Hmm, I think I should have the address and the phone number. You had mentioned it in one of your e-mail, which you had sent me sometime back.
