i had filled the tank before the journey and refilled her in the city at night before going home!

C-A-D, that's incredible mileage! What was the total distance travelled and how were the road conditions? AC on, off or partially used?

For 250Km highway run my Vista gave 20 KMPL.

Hi! C-A-D is your vista bottom touching the speed breakers at full load( 5 normal adults) speeds more than ZERO Kmph?

it was around 298.6 kms in all, morning to evening.

i'll say it was 80% highway. The highway was quite good and smooth except for a few rough patches here and there (not bad, tho').

the City run in hyderabad was easy in the morning (3rd, 4th gears) because there was not much traffic sunday morning. I was at crawling speeds in most of Bidar and on reentering Hyderabad late evening (2nd-3rd gears).

A/C was used intermittently on the ride to Bidar (50-50) but was used throughout the return trip (fogging windshield and wet weather).

never carried a full load till now, except on the day I collected the car and went to the temple when was driving very slowly over bumps (which didnt touch the car, btw).

Excellent FE figures CAD. This makes me wonder why test drives were claiming not more than 18km on the highway as well.

My three week old Black Swift VDi returned me 16.48 Kmpl in absolute city driving conditions and returned around 20.5 km/l during a short trip of around 450 kms on the Highway. City driving was with 50-50 AC and most of the highway driving was with AC on. She has just done 1000 Kms and will be taking her for her first service this week.

the mags also claim around 14 kmpl in town for Vista as well as for Palio MJD.

i now get around 17+ in city consistently after 1st service (around 14kmpl before that).

i bet the auto mags test the cars that have not yet been serviced the first time. and they must be ripping the cars to the max.

Thats exactly my opinion as well. Thats why i prefer reading the ownership reviews here than the so called expert magazine reviews!

My Palio's done about 2600 kms. FE has been slowly improving but is still at disappointing levels. Was getting around 11.5 initially and am getting between 13 & 14 now.

Gear Shifts
1-2 : 1500 ~ 1800
2-3 : 1800 ~ 2100
3-4 : 2200 ~ 2500
4-5 : 2300 ~ 2500

Most of my driving is done in city traffic here in chennai which really isnt bad compared to most other cities. However the roads and traffic near my work are pretty miserable where I sometimes do stretches of 1 to 2 kms in 1st or 2nd gear. I am Do Not rest my foot on the clutch.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong ?

It may look stupid but just want to check out if any one from Chennai with MJD getting 19+ kmpl?

Just trying to figure if at all there are some updations done to the ECU in other locations for a better refinement as part of regular services.

i dont think ECU would be reconfigured to your requirements during regular servicing at an authorised service center. they would ensure it meets the "official" specifications only.

IMO, ECUs are already configured to give the best possible FE, atleast in India. Any reprogramming is done with the intention of improving performance rather than FE.

2500@5th where do you drive mate?
(2000@4th = 64-65 kmph 2000@5th = 80kmph 2500@3rd = 50 - better to go on 1800@4th here for better FE)

In my humble opinion -
I read some where on TeamBHP that 3rd gear ratio is 1.8 and 4th is 1 on palio, this means you are buring almost twice as much fuel on 3rd as you are on 4th at the same speed!!! At lower speed - below 35-40KMPH- 4th cannot pull you need 3rd beyond that you if you are still on 3rd you are wasting fuel but you get a whole lot of power.

my suggestion is to upshift at 2K RPM always reason, Palio has max torque at 2000 RPM, this is the best time to change the gear as the car gets its biggest push at this point so puts lesser pressure on the higher gear (avoids lugging if you are fully loaded) hence more FE.
(torque = pulling power )

You can go up to 2.2K to upshift but beyond that if you are not on 5th i dont think it will be the best for your FE. Even on 5th FE should be impacted due to aerodynamic forces beyond 90kmph .. i think i read this in the manual i could be wrong though.

also note that between 4th gear ratio 1 and 5th's is .8 not much difference there but 5th tends to add up to good FE on long trips but 5th lacks pulling power it is good only for cruising not accelerating.

Just for the record the gear ratios i read on this forum and i have no way of proving they are correct or not.

(gear ratio = Revolutions of the wheel/ Revolutions of the engine i.e., at 3rd engine('s crankshaft) turns 1.8 times to turn the wheels once but at 5th it goes only 0.8 turns to get the wheel to turn once; Each revolution of the engine can be roughly taken as on unit of consumption of fuel- this explanation is overly simple but good enough to know how to drive for FE )

Thanks Aadi.
Now to implement it.

Was driving on the Bangalore highway yesterday to sriperambadur , was shifting at roughly the same figures as mentioned especially 3 to 4 and 4 to 5.
Was pretty kick *** . Did a 55 km stretch like this and the needle on the fuel gauge didnt move at all . Ok I exaggerate .
