Default Hard gear change - 2nd to 1st

My 2001 VXI Esteem's gear change from 2nd to 1st is hard (from Neutral to 1st to be precise), only when the vehicle is moving. But gear movement is absolutely smooth when vehicle is idle.
Keep in mind I have a slightly weak and hard clutch. Could this be a weak clutch issue.

I think the machine is designed that way. Most of the cars try to resist when one shifts to 1st gear when the car is in motion.
Ideally, i dont think it is necessary to shift to first during motion, however slow one is, by shifting to 2nd most of the times, the machine will start moving, unless one is on an uphill kinda terrain.

That is perfectly normal. In a moving car, engaging 1st is not necessary at all. Do not forcefully try it either, not good for the gear box !!

Do not know the very techy reasons for it, but am sure it is not needed & when it is required, you will be able to do it without any problem.

Cheers

it can be the weak clutch,
though it is normal to face some resistance while shifting to 1st from 2nd while in motion.

Shifting to first in all cars is difficult but it can be done easily. All you have to do is rev match a little more. If you want to downshift, press the clutch then blip the accelerator pedal before the clutch is disengaged and then slot to first gear then release the clutch. It's not easy and needs practice but it can be done.

I have seen some good drivers downshift to first at speeds of 30+kmph.

That's what I'm saying you need to rev match and make it gentle. Ofcourse it should not be done often, but it can be done.

When you are in second gear at say 20kmph and you wish to shift down to 1st. The output shaft connected to the wheels will be spinning faster than the input shaft from the engine. If you rev the engine just before slotting in the gear (called rev matching) you increase the speed of the input shaft. When the input shaft and output shaft speeds are same you will get a smooth shift.

This was true in older cars which did not have synchros even while upshifting. Nowadays gearboxes have synchro's in all gears and sometimes double synchros in 1st/2nd gear. That way even if you don't rev match the gear slots in easily.

This may be a problem with the clutch, I had similar issue with my Zen and after a few days the clutch gave up and I was left stranded on the road. I think one of the The clutch springs was broken and I had to change the clutch assembly. So instead of ignoring it as normal just get it checked. In my case it was almost close to impossible to to change gear specially from 2nd to 3rd but once I stop the car and shift the gears the problem would be gone. But it used to crop up again after some unpredictable time. And at last the clutch gave in.

Oddo - 66k. Its a second hand car bought just recently. And I had replaced clutch cable as well. Though car is in great condition.

So did clutch replacement alone solved the problem completely ?

66k!!?? when was the clutch+pressure plate changed last. Did the previous owner maintained the service history.

You should do the clutch test first (the handbrake wala) and if the test fails change the clutch+pressure plate. Also do change the clutch bearing. many people misses this small part but it matters a lot.

You can ask the service center to do a clutch bleed first and see if it helps, otherwise lubricating the cable system and joints will help a lil bet.

humyum has figured a DIY for the gear socket which will make it super smooth, but this he will have to update
