Default Funny Whistling Sound in Scorpio

Friends,

Reporting a peculiar sound emanating from the Bull. Two days back I
was coming back on NH8 when I heard a funny whistling sound while
overtaking a Q6. Didn't pay much attention but heard it again when
overtaking an Indica on the same stretch. Now, both time while
overtaking I was doing 90+ and had to step on the gas to increase
speed. This troubled me and I on a lone stretch gunned again and the
whistling sound came and as soon as I eased the pedal, it went off to
return as soon as I stepped on the pedal again.

Yesterday again while coming back on NH8 I was doing 90+ and it was a
lone stretch and I rolled down the window and stepped on the pedal.
The whistling sound re-emerged. Went off when pedal was eased and came back as I stepped on the pedal. I'll try to explain the whistling
sound. It is like what you guys must have heard on some highway big
trucks who put a flap on their exhausts and it makes that funny
whistling sound like a banshee when they gun the accelerator.

This morning I opened the hood to check on fluid levels and after
doing so started the vehicle as I noticed that the diesel filter
housing showed signs of leak. After the engine idled for sometime I
noticed diesel leak from one of the bolts on the Diesel filter housing
that is meant for tightening the top. This means that the fuel filter
is taking air but I did not notice it because I use a electric pump
that keeps the pressure intact. But could this be the reason for this
funny sound.

Any solution or diagnosis is welcome.. Mine is a non-CRDe 2004 GLx Scorpio that has clocked 80K.

If you rev her when parked at the same rpm as 90kmph, do you still hear whistling. If not, it has something to do with wind

Whistling sounds come from the turbo charger, but if it gets too loud it often means that your turbo charger+intercooler has gone kaput.

I used to have this problem no my former esteem. The driver side door beading had a small tear. So every time on the highway above a certain speed you could hear the whistle which was just air rushing into the cabin because of the torn beading. Could be a similar problem on your bull also. Just check all door beadings to make sure they are ok.

But since you say that there is a leak in the diesel system then test out what Tanveer has suggested.

Could also mean a leak on the air intake (turbo -intercooler) circuit.

I cannot be the turbo. Turbo spooling depends on engine speed not vehicle speed.
Speed related sounds can come from
1. Gearbox
2. Differential
3. wind

For example if at 90+ even at neutral, you hear whistling, gbox is most probably okay, its either wind or diffrential.

since the sound goes away once accelerator is released, its quite possible its a gbox/diff issue

GD, I agree with above - better to be safe than sorry. In the light of what I was mentioning to you the other day, better to have these high-pitched whines & whistles investigated ASAP.

Sorry, I lost you completely - so when the vehicle is at 90 kmph in 4th or 5th gear, isn't the engine also at higher revs than when, say it is at 60 kmph?

Suman what I meant was that if its the turbo, then even at 60kmph in lets say 3rd gear you will be at same rpm, and you will get the whistle.
GD in his post has specified that he gets it above 90, not at lower speeds when you can have turbo spooling if engine rpm is high

True, very true. I wonder if GD's tried the same RPM in different gear bit, then we'll know for sure.

Naughty Scorpio ...whistling at the Q6s and the Indicas

On a more serious note, I think it is definitely something to do with the Turbo, if it is happening only when you accelerate. I dont think it should be anything major, some minor adjustment of the turbo-related parts. I hear this sound on my neighbours Scorpio : a low whistle like sound only when it accelerates.

i think its the turbo whistling. you will hear a similar kind of sound when u see a Cummins engine fitted on TATA trucks accelerates. when u remove the foot from the accelerator pedal the noise reduces/vanishes.

@gd1418: i have been hearing this whistling sound in my scorpio (non-crde) for a very long time (but never had any problems). the sound comes when accelerating beyond 80 to 90 kmph. the sound is more audible while driving near the road divider. its like whhssszzzz (like the sound that one could hear from volvo b7r).

I think what you guys are describing is that high pitched whine that all scorpio's have. You can hear this sound very clearly from the outside. But that is a characteristics of the engine I would say. GD's problem is something new.

Very true.

To me, as described, it looks like lousy air filter. Do get it checked.
