Agreed. Even 800 manual says 10K.

But I felt that around 7.5K the engine felt coarse @ 100+ speeds (using synthetic). Never tried above 5K using Mineral.

You change oil/filter at every 5K and your engine will be smoother (less carbon deposits & metal sediments inside).

It is also true (stated by my mechanic) that many driving schools stretch the oil change/service limits to 20K (in Maruti 800) or more because they cannot afford to keep the car in garage. But those cars still get the job done, right.

If the car is used for long drives & no upgrade plans in the near future, i feel it is better to take extra care.

All fluids(engine, gear or transmission, brake, washer fluid) in the car should be changed on its birthday(the month it was manufactured not the day you got it). Thats the Laxman Rekha. If its a second hand car change all the fluidsthe day you buy it and consider the day you bought it as its birthday.
The only fluid that can be changed after two years is the coolant mixture which need be changed at a 2 year interval even if its mentioned as 3 years in some manuals. Dispose of used fluids the right way without hurting the environment.

If its predominantly used for city drives then keep the KM reading for change of oils the same as in the service manual even when using synthetic oil. The long interval period is at near ideal conditions. Please read the oil change interval in your owners manual when used in harsh and dusty conditions like in city conditions with diesel fumes and pollution all pervading. Its most likely half of the usual time. Care for a read.
