Default Refilling AC gas in my 2000 carb Zen

Hi,
My 2000 Carb Zen needs refilling of the AC gas. It was told to me by some mechanic that the AC gas that was used in the AC compressor earlier in my Zen is now banned and the newer gases (CFC free) can not be used in the compressor as it would result in poor cooling and also affect the compressor in long run.
He suggested fitting some components (I forgot which ones) after which the newer gas can be filled in the compressor and cooling will also be improved substantially. The total cost of the fitting and filing is stated to be around 7K.

Is it true? Do owners of the older cars face similar problem? Or the mechanic is trying to take me for a ride?

The existing R12 compressor cannot handle the higher operating pressure of the R134A gas. I was pursuing along the similar lines but have been advised to go for a R134 kit, instead of modifying the current system.
OT: Tata Motors offers the "Recon" facility where you surrender your existing compressor and condensor fan, and get a refurbished one, of course at a discounted price of almost 50% of the price of a new one. Please check if a similar facility exists with Maruti, as they have one of the OE suppliers in common (Subros).

Hiya Archat,

I have a 97 Zen. I re-filled my AC gas recently: a few weeks ago. My mech did not say anything about what you have mentioned. I do not know if my mech was ignorant or if your mech is right .

Yes, this is true! R12 gas is banned now for damaging the ozone layers etc. My Zen's AC is also not working well, the mechanic suggested change in some components like bubble bottle etc. (desi name) @ Rs. 3500

Yup, the older r12 is definitely available. Just had a refill done last month. Its more difficult to find and costs more.

R12 is banned, but its still easily available in the Indian markets. R12, was banned for car A/cs and R502 for Truck Refrigeration units.

r12 is banned but is easily available in delhi. Last month i got the gas filled for Rs 800/- in my 97 carb zen. Dont go for R134 as it has higher head pressure & will result in leaking of compressor seals.
