Does Teflon Coating Really Help?

Hey superavi,

3M has another treatment other than tefloncoat called surface refinement. I had mentioned that in another thread.

Could you please provide us details as to what this exactly is and whether its a polish or a coating.

I have got tefcoat applied once and now am considering surface refinement.

This is some imported product( Thats what they say) but not sure so will do what you have said above.

greatdrive, there are quite a few DIY polishes available in the market which you can try before you start spending obscene amounts of money. Formula 1 carnauba wax is what i have found the easiest to try. it is available for around 200 bucks. there are others like turtle wax etc. why dont you try one of them first ?

p.s. but do what you may, the satisfaction will never last long. dark colours on cars look good, but very very very difficult to clean & maintain. you will never be satisfied with the regular clean.

I think this is the nth thread on the topic, and I guess there was a common consensus that teflon coating as sold by the market is just hogwash,

what 3m offered to me as teflon coating is a good rubbing and polishing, Rule of thumb if some one is saying that it requires a second coat in 6th month or so then you can be sure you are getting gyped and not getting teflon.

I am yet to see some one who has applied a another layer on the paint surface.

I totally respect rudra sen's opinion on this and regret going ahead with a teflon coating

I have get Teflon coating done on my new Wagon R LXi during first service, and they have charged me Rs.2600, and will do two coatings more during next two years, all included in this price only. Car is shining now, but I don't know how long it will last..

Just had a confusion and wanted people's opinion on Teflon Coating.
I have done this in all of my cars! In my exp, this is a good protection to the painted surfaces from premature colour fading! Also, the vehicle will look as good as newly painted just after a wash!!

I have a Black coloured Petra EL and it looks dirty even If I clean it almost everyday.
This is a common problem with blacks!! Keep cleaning whenever you feel its dirty!!

Questions are
1. Will Teflon coating prevent it from getting dirty?
No!!
2. Will it be easier to clean?
Yes!!
3. How much does it cost to do it in Bangalore.
Good ones like 3M will cost you somewhere near 3.5-4k!!
4. Some reputed names in Bangalore, who works in genuine teflon coating?
3M will definitely be there. Find out! Also look for genuine Dupont's too!!
5.Is it a myth that small scratches goes after teflon coating or its true?
Its a bit true!! But not deep scraches!!

I'm a layman, but from what I've observed on my car and some others is that teflon coating serves very little purpose and is a big rip off.
I'd pick a good wax polish job anyday.

Hmmm... Teflon application rates seem to vary from city to city. In hyderabad one of my friends got his Xeta 'teflon'ed. The guy came to his home with some scrubbing device and what not. Huffed and puffed for close to 2.5 hours and charged 1500 bucks. Thats it. As for its utility I would say its bas char din ki chandni. Sooner than later it comes back to the previous state.

By the way, what is so technical stuff in this Teflon thing? Why is it posted here?

I concur. I have had 3M Car Detailing done for my car and bike and nowhere does it say that it is teflon coating. So far, I have been impressed very much by what 3M has had to offer even if it is tad expensive.

Lets get some doubts cleared here, Teflon is a registered brand owned by Dupont.

Personally I think its a rip-off because sooner or later, scratches and dents are inevitable. Even if you are careful, some fool will damage your car in the parking lot. Usually, one is very extra protective of the car initially, and feels bad for scratches if they occur to a less than 1 year old car. But, frankly no point taking it personally, after all, scratches/ dents can be repaired,

I have never understood the concept of 'Teflon Coating' for car exteriors. I know for sure that Teflon is a material that, to be applied to a surface needs to be sprayed on in liquid form to form a layer that permanently adheres to the underlying surface, and once it dries and solidifies, it forms a surface that resists adhesion of other particles and scratching. How Teflon can be rubbed onto cars is beyond me. And even if it can be, Teflon is not colorless or transparent. So that should leave your car's exterior looking like an omlette frying pan.

I always park my car outside. and i know how much teflon coating matters to me. for a measly 2k-3k, i dont have to wax polish my car even once after 2 yrs of use, it still shines like new! so its not completely useless, u ll have to clean your car lesser daily.
