Question Please help - Humming noise from engine bay

Dear All,

Just recently my petrol Swift (Sep 2005) has developed a bit of humming noise somewhere in engine bay. Since noise free car is my top priority I need to get this rectified.

On close inspection on last weekend, I found that it is coming from the belt which propels the alternator. When I told this to MASS, they told me to ignore it. Reason : To check, they will need to remove the assembly and the problem is not that worth

Is there anything I can do without actually removing alternator and belt. Can I get it greased from my good old mechanic ?

Or worst, is this is the real issue? Can such humming noise appear from alternator bearing or incorrect tension in the belt ?

The humming noise could be due to a faulty bearing. Would be better to check.

Try pouring some water on the belt to see if the noise stops. If it does, then it's likely to go away on tightening the belt just a little bit. Or, pour some soapy water on it to make the noise disappear for some time (don't worry, the soap will not make the belt slip once the water evaporates - don't grease it, grease will destroy the belt).

If the noise does not stop still, you need to check the idler bearings.

Our M800 also had humming noise and this was traced to water pump.
Keep the car in neutral and then raise rpm. If the humming noise increases when you raise rpm, then the diagnosis is correct by MASS. Else this noise is from some other source. Dont apply grease as SS traveler has mentioned. My friend who is currently in USA for further studies made this mistake in his swift ( which was bought on my recommendation ). The belt then had to be replaced. So be cautious before you do anything with belt.

Humming noise:

1) Could be the tensioner bearing
2) Could be the gear box
3) Could be the Water pump
4) Could be the hardened belts

If any of the above, its better rectified ASAP.

This will avoid further complications and extensive expensive repairs.

Thanks all. I will get the tension and bearing checked.

And yes this is alternator belt issue for sure.

Most probably its your water pump bearing.

abhaybakshi, I had a similar experience with my car too. After a regular service, right after i took my car out of the shop, I figured there was some noise coming off the engine bay. I couldn't initially pick up on the source but immediately turned back to the service station. At the station, they figured it was one of the belts causing the issue and sprayed something on it while it was running and the noise subsided.
Iím not 100% sure if that is the root cause but you can give this a shot at your service station.
