Replacing a silencer is expensive get it welded/fixed.Get the lower arms inspected for the noise.

1. It seems that the weld on internal baffle has opened up. The best bet is to get it repaired as a new silencer could set you back upwards of 2K. A properly done weld should last the life time of the silencer - about 5-6 years.

2. Seems to be a shock absorber problem. Get it checked by a shock absorber expert. most probably you may have to change the shock absorber. Also check the mountings, the nut holding the shock could be loose/broken.

Hello All,

My Alto finally underwent its 5th service (2nd paid) last week. It was supposed to be given when the odo was reading 20k. But due to some unavoidable usage, I gave it for service when the odo read 22k.

Here is the brief summary of the service done.

1. Oil / Fuel / Air filter replacement.
2. Engine Throttle Body cleaning.
3. New NGK spark plugs
4. Swith over to Mobil XHP Super 10W40 Mineral Oil.

I find the car to be back in Stock form with the Service done, except for the regular door rattling noise. With all this done, I thought of putting across this question that I had in mind for a long time.

My Alto is in Stock form with no additional mods done to it. The car does not show any strain to reach 90kmph. However, getting past that speed is getting more like a dream during the recent times. I came across several articles and threads where I am able to read Alto touch 120kmph.

I would appreciate suggestions that would help me make my Alto cross atleast 110kmph. I would be using it mostly for long drive in the coming days and would be more than happy if it could touch this speed.

In addition to that, would a Wheel Balancing, Alignment and Rotation add to the improvement in speed?

All your suggestions are welcome. By the way, please note that I am currently not loaded with Vitamin M to spend on modifications. So anything that would help me getting this speed with the stock form would be highly appreciated.

What is the maximum speed you are able to achieve in your alto?
My alto is similar to yours(done about 26000kms) and I have done over 130kmph in it several times although acceleration is really slow after 110kmph.

I am able to hit 90kmph easily and from there I am able to touch 100kmph with lot of effort put it. And after that the car stops responding and gets exhausted.

Hi Arvind, i used an Alto in Bangalore for 3.3 years and covered around 47,500 kms in it. I have done around 50 long drives in it which included 800kms drive in a single day too and the car never let me down. I used to drive it around steady 90-100km/hr in the highways. Alto is capable of reaching 140km/hr but my question is why do you want to do anything above 100 in an alto? Its risky and its not meant for it too. The car is light and handling is also not safe above 100km/hr. To do above 100km/hr you need a good amount of open stretch or else you can do it in 4th gear as the acceleration will be quicker but again that will strain the small engine. I would suggest you to drive it at a maximum 100km/hr and drive safe. Its really a wonderful car and i love this car to every bits.

Do you keep the a/c on when you were driving at high speeds. The A/c is a performance killer on the small engine'd Alto. Also how many passengers did you had in the car?

My oldie 800 with FFE and K&N easily reached more than the ton mark without breaking a sweat. However i noticed a performance drop after i shifted from Total 20W50 to Shell Helix 20W50 motor oil (both mineral) and am cursing myself for putting that oil in the car.

As samba points out alto is not meant to be driven above 100kmph. My Alto sounds like its begging for mercy above 120kmph. Alto has quite a small engine and it is quite difficult to go over 100 in it with passengers and the AC on.

Is the alto can easily touch 140kmph in 4th and maintain the speeds in 5th as long as the road is level. On good roads like the expressway, the alto can show a good 155kmph indicated, however I believe there might be a slight downslope there.

Best speeds to maintain is between 110 and 120 Kmph to have decent progress.

How much HP does the Alto have you are talking about?

This is Alto power:

I will take a picture of my speedo when I will speed over the highway next time.... But I think I will never reach the 180kmph (speedolimit) again...

Aravind's Alto is powered by the 800 cc engine and as DeOetelaar has the Vxi version with the four cylinder engine which powered the Indian wagon R earlier, performance would be much better in the latter's case.
But I also agree to the view that speeds above 100 kmph in an Alto is not recommendable.

Thanks for your reply Samba. My concern is to find out what the problem is with my Alto to hit more than 100kmph. I understand that it is not safe to drive above 100kmph which I never indulge in. But I would like to figure out why is my Alto getting exhausted when it is capable enough of hitting 120kmph and above.

There are very few occasions when I might be able to pull out a little more power from it which seems to be a dream now and I am looking forward to fix that.

How is the loading pattern by number of occupants and luggage when you tried this and failed?
Coming to wheel balancing and alignment, if the run and steering behavior at 90kmph is steady, that may not be the hitch which is restricting the speed raising.
Perhaps, accelerating to much higher speeds through the gears would help to cross the barrier. I too have not done this in my Alto which I owned close to 6 years. One thing is sure, in Kerala roads it is difficult to do so, especially in an Alto considering all the brouhaha on these roads and the vehicle dynamics.

Sorry, I missed to add these details in my previous post. I am finding this issue only when I am the only person driving the car with completely no load and luggage. And this seems to be putting me through a lot of confusion as to why the Alto gets exhausted when touch 100kmph itself.

I would not mind if this behavior is present with load and luggage, but something is fishy when it behaves this way when I am the only person driving it.

Aravind, I own an Alto 800 which has clocked around 40K Kms. Its is easliy possible to do over 100Kmph in an Alto with 3 onboard and moderate amount of luggage. The fastest I had driven it was a shade below 140 Kmph for a short duration during one of my early morning Bangalore- Chennai drives with myself and wife onboard. Speedo was still going northward at that time though at a snail pace. However my intention at that time (guess yours also) was just to check what will be the maximum speed car will be able to achieve and on nearing 140 that curiosity gave way to concern and I let go of the pedal. This was with AC off and all windows rolled up. The reason I wanted to try the same was at that time I had just got my 20K service done which included all replacements you did along with gear oil change.

However my usual top speed in Alto is limited below 90 Kmph that too in GQ due to safety concerns of the car and Indian road conditions in general.
