Thanks. Do you have any idea of the prices of both? Just so that I'm not taken for a ride!

Also any ideas if the old rims can be exchanged for new ones and what they would fetch? They have run 128500km and have widened rim holes but otherwise not dented/damaged or rusted.

Mine is a non Power Steering version; have run 128600km on 145/80 R12 (MRF & Apollo).

What effect will R13 rims have on steering effort/safety of cornering?

Then Zen originally came with 13 inchers.

With 13 inchers the steering will be slightly heavier during parking, while on the move you will admire the surefootedness of its handling. An ideal upsize will be 155/65 R13's.

Thanks. Not to be picky, but mine came with 145/80 R12 as stock (back in Jan 2001). Even if someone smells a rat there, I guess its 10 years too late!

MPFI Zens did come with 12 inch tires. The 2 door Carbon and Steel MPFI version though came with 13 inch tires.

The 145/70r13 on previous zens were prone to bent rims and this was reason MUL introduced 12 inchers.

Im seeing something odd from quiet sometime.

My '99 Carb Zen idling RPM drops to ~600 from ~850 when I turn on the headlight!

I have 100/90w philips rally lights installed. Is this the reason?

Also, as per my assumption, rpm should rise when demand increases.

Did you get a relay installed? Then check its wiring, could be badly installed.

Also reasons could be a weak battery and or a weak alternator.

Please check the voltage at the battery with the car idling without lights on - it should read 13.6-13.8 volts even at idle(the ideal value is 14-14.2V)

Check voltage again with lights on - there should be an insignificant drop(max 0.1V drop).

If the drop in voltage is more than that, it is either a weak alternator(less likely 'coz the Denso alternator is a super performer) or weak main wiring(more likely)

In either case (battery or alternator), won't the battery light come on (very weakly on idle, if its the alternator) in the dash warning lights?

Nope it wont. The battery light is only meant for the battery and has no bearing with the alternator. Once the car starts with battery power it switches onto the power from the alternator for its electricity requirements.

So the battery light wont show up if the alternator is faulty.

One can understand that the battery is weak if the initial starter motor crank while you crank the key is slow.

You could notice this also when you try to start the engine after a long use of any electricals when the engine is off.

It happened in my car. No doubt that the battery was old, but it would still crank. The battery light would glow so dimly as to be visible only in relative darkness. Once the alternator was replaced (battery being the same), this issue was rectified.
