Well the main reason GPS cannot be used as "primary" device for these functions is GPS signals reliability/unavailibity in the tunnel, heavy cloud cover, etc. GPS is pretty reliable in general however there are certain drawbacks and you would definetly not like these instruments not working your car on certain occasions.

Some after-market timing devices use exactly this method (along with accelerometers) to calculate 0 - 100 & 1/4 mile times. Plus, they allow you to make a virtual lap anywhere; the time around this "circuit" will be timed lap after lap.

Is it a good idea for everyday cars? Absolutely NOT! Cars are getting more complicated by the day, lets enjoy some things in the good ol' fashioned way.

On-Star GPS in the new Caddy SRX now displays posted speed limits in your dash.
