Default Non-functioning speedo and Tacho

What could be the reason for the speedo as well as the tacho not functioning? The speedo moves a little bit on starting the engine and the tacho moves upto abt 500rpm and then stays there. I suspect its most likely an electrical connection fault behind the instrument panel. What do you guys think? Rehaan, help me out again. And if it makes any difference, the odometer and the trip meter are digital.
