Rattling also is an issue but one can live with it. I have experienced rattling mainly when the car is in the 4th gear and even as its doing 55 plus speed.

Once the parking guys literally seem to have manhandled to ORVM and there is some prominent noise coming from there now. I have found no solution to it as of now.
I mean from here air leaks inside the cabin.

Yes, yes, I meant the same place from where outside air comes in! Sorry if my message confused you. Tata should look to solve these niggles completely.
By the way, that black roof looks nice!

Hi Nano-ites,

I have just purchased a new Nano LX BS 3 in Goa. Papaya Orange.
Personally, I am a die hard Maruti fan but my wife really took a shine to the Nano, so....
The intention is to use it as a city runabout rather than buy a two wheeler, which IMHO is dangerous - especially in Goa.

The sales experience was not great and I had to shift my booking from one showroom to another.
Finally got delivery in two weeks (3 days wasted at RTO due to elections).

I had ordered the following at the dealership :
Stereo System - Nippon (Kenwood) with two speakers that sit on the dash.
Central locking with 2 remotes.
Alloy wheels - 4.
3M film.
3M anti rust for underbody with 5 year warranty.
Floor mats and mud flaps

I got absolutely NO freebies from the dealer except for a pack of Soan Papdi!!
I had to pay Rs. 350/= for the number plates. That's a first for me. Never ever have I had to pay for number plates on a new car.

Some observations :
The dealer refused point blank to take back the old (new) steel wheels.
I was charged an additional Rs. 1000/= to fit the alloys.
The central locking does not make a beep/chirp sound when arming or disarming. However, the lights flash.
When I asked about this at the dealer, no one had any idea what I was talking about till I demonstrated it on my Wagon R!!
If the alarm is triggered, the horn sounds. No hooter provided at all.
Dealers insist that you fit stereo and central locking with them quoting the usual "you will void the warranty" nonsense.
However, they were so insistent that I decided to do as suggested.
The stereo system is probably the worst I have ever heard and the speakers are a joke - specially made for the Nano - sure!!
Speaker wires are visible on the dashboard.

A few questions I would like to ask :

The horn is pathetic and would not move a stray puppy off the road.
Is it possible to fit a proper dual horn with relay.
This will mean cutting into the wiring. Again warranty void!!!
Has anyone done this so far?

The headlights although pretty good are not good enough for the dark roads of Goa. Has anyone here upgraded to 90/100 with a relay? Any issues? Dealer advises against this. Says battery cannot take the load.

Has anyone fitted proper speakers on the doors or on the rear tray and if so any problem doing this? My intention was to change the rear cardboard tray for an MDF one. Once again the dealer says the battery cannot take the load. Are the electrics on a Nano so sensitive or is it just the two fire incidents that have caused this paranoia???

Is it possible to change the battery for a more high powered one? Will the alternator be able to charge a higher powered battery? Gurus please advise.

Has anyone changed to Yokohama or Michelin tyres? Any upsizing? Any difference in comfort, road noise etc? My car came fitted with JK's. Yokohama dealer suggests I change to the same size on all four tyres - 160 x 60 x12.

I find the gearing to be too tall especially for a hilly region like Goa and more so during the running in period where I am trying to stick to the makers recommendations.

A/C is pretty effective but I cannot quite agree with GTO where he calls it an absolute chiller and had to turn the control knob up a few degees to the warm section. Guess I have been spoiled by Maruti!!!

The A pillar has a large blind sector. However, as my other cars are a Wagon R and SX4, I am sort of used to that.

Any suggestions to my questions above would be very welcome.

Regards,
SS

Dear All,

My close friend's Nano has covered 12 K KMS and all the tires has worn out. Is it normal. There was issues with abnormal tread wear and was reported to TASS several times. Every time they came back saying it is fixed.

Is it normal for tires to wear out so early?

Fellow Bhpians who has covered more than 13 K KMS please let me know on the status of your tires.

My Nano crossed 14000 kms mark three days back and all the tyres are good to go for another 25000-30000 Kms. There is some problem with left hand suspension and I have put the spare because I felt the left tyre was getting affected.Tell your friend to get all the shockers and suspension parts checked.

BTW I have also seen some Nanos running on front semi bald/bald tyres.

Hi all,

I opened the engine cover today while washing my Nano, Well I found the coolant level below MIN mark, The manual mentions "premixed" coolant (50:50)
I dont want to go to Tata all the way for just this task so I want fill the the auxiliary coolant tank myself so can you please advise which coolant should I use and what is the meaning of premixed, do I have to mix the coolant or will be coming mixed from the company itself and which brand is suited for the Nano.

Edit: Do i Have to add coolant into the aux. tank only or Will I have to add in the radiator too (if yes then how much)?

Hi Richie,

Just top it off with distilled water that's it. No need to add pre-mixed coolant.

First of all Congratulations!

Now coming to all your question.

1) Please refrain from upgrading as much possible with electrical stuff -

2) Regarding the headlamps they are really bright use additionally the fog lams it will brighten the pot holes. I would not recommend 90/100 on these as the reflectors will go for a toss. Even with fog lamps if you find issue with visibility then upgrade to Osram or Philips extreme 55/60 headlamp it will be helpful with no alternation required for wiring.

3) The remote lock OEM for Tata Nano is Autocop and it does not come with a hooter when alarmed it just triggers the horn.

4) You can mount component speaker on the door using MDF rings or put a MDF plank for 6x9 speakers. I have installed Rockford 6.5 components and they do pretty decent job.

5) Upgrading the tyres not recommended at all, as the will interfere the body balance. Also the PCD will be altered. Which will give you ODO / Speedo error.

6) No you cannot upgrade the battery, there isn't enough space and also the alternator will not support and will be an additional load to engine if altered.

7) Horns - yes you may upgrade - what I did is upgraded to a low tone bosch which does better than the OEM. Adding a relay will add up to additional wiring, the battery being under the seat make it way to clumsy to add any additional wiring.

If I missed something let me know. Have a happy ride. Its a cute little wonder. Do not expect too much from it. Just enjoy it.

I have a Nano CX 2011 model on which we got the central locking installed. A noob question alert here!

However, I now realise I should have also asked for power locking. Any idea how/ where I can get this installed? If anyone has done this, can they also give me expected costs?

Hi Mad Tiger,

Thanks a lot for all the info.
Your first and last lines say it all.
Basically that's what the showroom guys said - don't touch the elctrics and don't expect too much from this car.
OK. Guess I'll have to change my plans a bit.
I will try the Osram Nightbreaker Plus but they are rather expensive. Fitting the Minda relay with 90/100 seemed a cheaper and better option but if like you say the reflectors can't handle it then I'll stick to your idea.

I spoke to a JBL speaker dealer who said he can fit the speakers on the doors but the spacer ring will stick out quite a bit. Also, as there is no glove compartment, I don't want to lose the door pockets which is the only storage space in the car. Might have to go for the MDF tray at the back. Have you got the tray. Is it exactly the same as the original - viz. does it sit properly and not rattle or squeak when the car moves?

Yeah! I have also decided to stick to the original tyres as no one is able to advise on this subject. Same for the battery. Will see about the horns. Even mobikes have dual horns so why not the Nano??? I will check again with the dealer and get it fitted there to avoid any warranty issues.

Thanks once again for the help.

Will keep you updated.

Regards,

SS

I will post a picture on how the door looks after you install speakers on the front door. If the rear parcel tray is fixed well it should not rattle but there are no good mount points you have to drill in or fix a metal bracket for the parcel tray to stay up.

Hello,
Are you referring to remote lock here? If yes you have to get remote kit installed the OEM is Autocop. The total kit may cost upto 3k.

thanks.

I would be much obliged if you could do that.
It will give me an idea of what to expect before any cutting of door panels is done.
Presume no issue with speaker magnet touching the door and/or vibration from the speaker?

Please use coolant to top up the reservoir and NOT distilled water. The dealer will do this for free, I believe.

The other advice given to you to clear your queries are spot on correct.

Do you know why the tires are of different sizes, incidently? This question has been answered in this very thread, IIRC.
