Actually, I protested about the price right there. But I didn't realise the price difference was so much, and I needed the vehicle fixed this week. So I paid grudgingly.

After I came back and started the thread, I came to realise that official Hyundai prices are a total rip-off compared to what you can get outside. Therefore I have all the reason to protest the fact that Hyundai charged me 5 times of what it should have cost me.

I feel robbed, and all this happened in daylight. Hence the term daylight robbery. I was not aware of Hyundai's notorious practice of charging 5 times the open market price. Now I know, in hindsight. Hope that clears your doubt. I also updated the thread title to reflect the situation.

i will not recommend that and nor should you. If it fails, it normally happens when there is no lubrication with grease, The bearing will heat up and fail miserably. You can be stranded in middle of nowhere.

@ Samurai.
Why didn't you tried the second option man. (read our solutions).
Today you defied the very existence of tbhp man.

Agree 100% to what SS says

I am used to driving unreliable vehicles, after all I own a Jeep. But my wife will refuse to drive anything juggad. Ever since the drive axle diagnosis, she didn't drive the car, instead took the rickshaw. Also, I had to leave town by weekend. So what is she going to do in my absence? Who will drop and pickup the kid from school and therapy?

There was no time to go around looking for Santro AT drive axle in independent shops or send the drive axle to SS-T for refurbishing. Our Santro is not a hobby vehicle that can sit around in garage for weeks or months. I needed it back in top shape same week, so that I can leave town on Sunday. Fortunately, the axle got delivered on Thursday, I could get it installed on Friday. Therefore, I could continue with my travel plans on Sunday.

BTW, there is a slight difference between MT and AT drive axles. Getting Santro AT drive axle in open market would have been very difficult and time consuming.

Like I said, its only for a little while (probably takes a week to shop for a deal) and has been proven to work in many cases.

BTW, my friend who got it cleand+repacked with grease and put a new boot on it drove for years with (minor clicking noise) but zero issues and even sold the car like that. Like cancer, you have to catch it early.

The driveshaft repair is sensible if you catch the grease leak early. My thread about drivehshaft was all about that.

Hey Samurai!
I would have arranged a drive axle if you have asked and would have parcel it to you. It would have cost much lower even if i have considered shipping.

Hi Samurai,

IIRC, this car is sold so it may not be of much interest to you, but I mentioned this case to my Service Advisor. He immediately checked with their spares manager and confirmed that the drive axle for Santro AT costs Rs. 4500 (for the older AT model) and Rs.8500 for the Xing version (AT model). Again, they need VIN (chassis No.) to confirm the exact part version that's compatible with the car as there are continuous updates even during the model cycle. But there is no way it can cost 22K. He was very keen to have the chassis no. of this particular car.

If you are willing to share the chassis no. or the part no. for the drive axle, I can close the loop.

Otherwise, this is just for the records.

Cheers!

Note:
I asked him if the axle for the AT version can be really expensive for some technical reason and he said no. The only difference between the drive axle for AT and MT is - the drive axle life is shorter for the AT (and so replacement intervals are shorter) because there is no engine braking and entire strain comes on the axle.

I too heard the number Rs.8500, but for the Xing MT model. The Xing AT drive axle is made of noble metals like gold and silver, so it is Rs.22500 each. Now the Santro has changed hands, Jaggu has it.

BTW, couple months back 4x4addict who has the same AT model found a Hyundai parts importer in Coimbatore, who was selling the imported AT drive axle for 3500 bucks!

Which confirmed to me that Hyundai is indeed robbing the AT customers by charging them very high premium.

For my alto's service at Eminent Service Trivandrum, I had to insist (twice) to check the axle boot, then the mechanic goes "Oh yes, I noticed now, right side boot is damaged. But don't worry, it's just a small hole now."
I immediately asked for a replacement. I got a prompt reply "Sorry sir, the axle boot is out of stock". It makes more economical sense for them to replace the full axle later than change just an axle boot now, right?

It seems to be a dealer level problem.
If you/Jaggu can find time to get me the chassis number, I will get the exact part no. and price for the drive axle.

Yes right - the Santro AT model drive axle is 22.5 K each!

I recently had the bad luck of finding out. We have a 8 year old santro AT. 2 months ago when turning to the left, it started to make a clicking sound. I took it to the service advisor at HMP , Delhi who told me you have 2 options - pay through your nose, or go to a specialist parts shop outside and get it fitted.
I chose the latter - as it would be cheaper that way.
Went there, and was told that they have 3 options, they can repair the existing axle or replace it.
a) Price of repair around Rs 1000/-
b) Rs 2500/- for a refurbished (read "welded") axle,
c) Rs 5000 for a "new" axle.

I chose to get a "new" axle. Later came to know the main reason for axle failure is that the A.S.S. guys never check the condition of the rubber boots.

I have since resolved to insist on this check everytime I take the car for service.

Forewarned is better than regretful hindsight!

And what's the chassis no. of your car?

The reason is I want to find out the truth - the ASC here in Pune is willing to help - if you look at my previous post, I have mentioned the details.

You can PM me the chassis number, if you are willing. Without the complete chassis number, I or the ASC can not do anything.

Thanks.

My 2007 model Hyundai Santro AT bought second hand from Hyundai Advantage at Blue Hyundai in Bangalore makes a noise while turning on low speeds. The folks at Blue Hyundai say it is a drive shaft problem there is no warranty (though it is yet to complete one year from date of purchase and hence within the so called Advantage warranty). It had done 17300 KM when purchased in Mar 2011 and currently is at 20500. Does anyone know any mechanic/garage in Bangalore who can give me a repair/spend 25K opinion. My wife does only 250-300K a month on it.
