Hi sunsetorange,

Do give your vehicle to any reputed ford A.S.S and ask them to flash the new ECU firmware after checking its base version. That should take care of the problem. I had heard that this issue was not very common with the 2012 batch of figos but anyways, it wouldn't hurt to go and get it checked.

So far i have done approx 10k kms without any problem.
It happened on day 2 from purchase when my son was driving in thick traffic. Luckily the general traffic speed was very slow, and nobody rear-ended us.

It's also happened to me once on an empty road, when the car had around 1000 kms on the odo. I was braking from 80 kmph when I spotted a speedbreaker. I slowed down, but before I could release the clutch, the engine died, when the car was around 20 kmph.

I attribute both incidents to us being not used to driving diesels. It's never happened again. My car is 5 months old.

The 20k service will be due in a week. Will check.

I'm driving diesels for the past 20 years. It has nothing to do with that. I've had similar experience only with an Opel Corsa which had ECU problems.

guys, not sure whether this is relevant to this thread's topic :

I was on a 570km drive yesterday from cochin to bangalore

conditions :
- tdci titanium
- 4 people with luggage
- car is not much run-- 6.1k odo before the drive
- car has dec 2011 VIN, I had asked for S/W update on the 2nd service if any, he had said yes it needed to be updated & that they had updated it
- car completed 2nd service around 7-8 months ago, hardly ran 2k kms after that

this is what i experienced around 7-8 times :
- in 5th gear (for speeds ranging from 90 to 110) there is some 'knocking' from the engine; (the sound is drrrrrrrrrrrr--gdu-gdu-gdu---drrrrrr) the kind of sound and A-pedal feel you get when you are in a gear too high for the speed and the engine is about to die... the whole car 'jerks' like it is about to cough for 2-3 seconds & gets back to original smooth running - this was very scary at speeds ; so stuck to 80-90 after that and got this once for this speed range as well. (all this happens in 5th, dont remember exactly whether this occured while i was in 4th or lower, but I am inclined to believe this did not happen on any gear other than 5th)

After 5-6 hrs after the drive got over, I examined the oil-level and it showed full (all 4 sections are dark after I dipped the stick in again after cleaning it with cloth)
What else could be the problem ? Fuel quality ? (tanked in cochin from same HP pump we have been tanking up for long; this is the first time this occured)

Any leads guys ? I dont want to take it to any ford SC before I get a reply from you guys; Please help.

Venky please let me know the following,

1. Do you rest your foot on the clutch after a gear change?
2. Is this krr-krr noise pronounced with a reluctance of gear shifting?
3. Is the gear shift normal or is there resistance?

If your answer is yes to the above, i believe your clutch is failing.

answer is no to all of above
the sound is not krr-krr (which as you rightly pointed out is related to clutch) ; the sound is a feeble "duugg--ddggiii---ddddgggg" but the vehicle shivers as if somebody is driving in too high a gear (say if for example, one tried to cross a hump in 3rd , the engine is about to die, the vehicle vibration is high, then if you expertly ride the clutch and recover it)
- all the symptoms I experienced happens when there has been no gear change in the recent past, left foot is on the floor , no change in A-pedal input & the vehicle is cruising at 100-110 on the highway , then suddenly engine vibration for 2 seconds & vehicle is back to cruising again (very perplexing and very scary )

Something tells me that the thing to suspect could be the engine mounts. At lower rpms(like 16xx-18xx but in the correct gear, the engine will vibrate a litte but is restricted by the mounts and the damping. I assume your vehicle has run post 30k kms? Do try and replicate this issue and check the rpm at which this happens and also, the gear if it gets particularly nasty.

Stall happened on 14th Feb 2014, exactly 2 years and 3 months after the firmware was updated from the original one to firmware number/ version 75. Firmware was updated as car was continuously stalling on a daily basis.

Promptly took it to service station the next day and the firmware was again updated from 75 to current firmware number / version 89. As per the technician, it is the same which is working under the hood of the current facelifted figos.

A major change seen is the 'water in fuel filter light' has now started working again. It had stopped working / glowing after firmware was updated to ver 75 in Nov 2011.

Total cost involved: INR 550.

Just hoping that this update keeps my car away from the infamous stalling.

Hi Esu Junior, how is the clutch switch related to stalling while running? Rather was your issue related to starting the car?

I had a similar problem on my Classic Fiesta TDCI. I took it for its regular servicing and the issue has not bothered me again. I am guessing they must have updated the firmware on my car too.

The clutch switch is the culprit for the stall issue. Same issue was seen in my car. At first they identified as firmware issue then they said clutch switch needs to be set correctly. They adjusted some play in the clutch sensor switch so it doesn't keep turning off the engine. My guess is they should have changed it under warranty which they did not.

This engine stalling issue started on my new fiesta-1.5P a few months back. The engine would die while idling at traffic lights or in traffic jams. Took the car to harpreet ford gurgaon, and they hooked on the scanner, upgraded some software, and said you can go now, it won't happen again. So far the ecu upgrade seems to be working. Stalling issue gone!
It seems, this stalling issue is generic on all fords, be it diesel or petrol, figo or fiesta, escorts or mustangs.

I think you are correct Vidyut. Even in my Figo, the stalling issue has not been rectified after the upgrade or whatever they did till now. It reappears now and then and the next time I go to Lathangi, I will ask the SA to check the clutch switch.
