I have faced this issue couple of times too after 2nd Service. The car used to die when I slow down to take an hump. Since most of the times this happened during a cold start I assumed it was due that and tried to keep the engine idle for a minute before I started. However, even that did not help. But the issue occurs randomly so is difficult to replicate.

I'm almost due for 3rd service, will get it checked with A.S.S. Defenitely sounds like an issue plauging Figo TDCi.

Guys, the thing is I too would have ignored it and just moved on like the first 2 instances, but you realize the hazard only when this happens just before you take a corner and the car moves perpendicular to where you intend it to steer it.

I would suggest all who have similar issues with their car get it checked at the A.S.S rather than just ignoring it, my 2 cents.

+1 jayded.

This problem looks so simple and not much annoying as it occurs very rarely, but thats a very serious issue. Those who are ignoring this issue, read my earlier post in this thread. The incident that happened to me because of this issue was the most scariest thing happened to me in 25 years of driving. Have this issue resolved.

To the experts,
As the CRDI systems run on high pressure, is a small air bubble in the fuel system still cause engine to die or miss few beats?

Really scary problem.
Most of the other minor issues with the figo are just irritating, but this one really scares me
I havent faced this with my figo till now (touchwood).
Will follow this thread keenly, @jayed, please keep it updated with your findings.
And thanks Mustang for all the valuable suggestions

This is because fuel moves around as the car moves around, While climbing steep slopes, fuel goes backward and vice versa, even when we turn fuel moves around.

This also happens in petrol variants (ask me i had to get the fuel pump of my ikon changed) but is less prominent as if you rely on DTE, it will be less prominent.

for eg: DTE shows 20kmpl

which can mean there is 2 L of petrol or 1 L of diesel left. So in such a scenario, diesels are more prone to fuel pump damage.
Thanks for trying to clarify and help us on finding a solution to this problem.

However, the fuel behaves the same way in so many other million cars on road while its below a certain level and I dont think they have a problem. Then why its just the Ford!?

There should be someway by which this issue is handled in other cars. Its not a common problem in cars that we are discussing here!

And I am shocked to see the number of members reporting the same trouble! This is a serious issue which needs to be quickly addressed by Ford. Changing fuel pumps every other time is not the solution!

Possible reasons i can think of
1. Short of fuel
2. Pump hose supply cut
3. Fuel Quality (Presence of water)
4. Fuel filter clogged
5. Petrol in fuel (doubt that since so many Figo owners have reported the same problem)
6. Faulty fuse somewhere

My suggestion : Change the fuel filter + Reset the ECU and check.

@jayded

Another possible cause,

Its my general observation that when you revv an eninge at high speed and suddenly take your feet off the accelearator, the engine suddenly slows down to the idle speed. The slow down to the idle speed is very fast, and many times I noticed that the engine slows down to a few rpm below the actual idle rpm and returns back to the idle rpm within a second or two once the sensor notices that it has gone down. This was noticed in the older generation low tech engines too.

My point here is, could it be possible that your idle rpm is set exactly to the border and anything below that it can not sustain and dies.

To be more clear, say your car can idle comfortably at 700rpm. When the above said observation is applied here, your engine goes down to 670rpm for a second or two which the engine is unable to sustain and so it dies.

If what I said above makes sense, the solution is increase your idle speed by 50 or 100rpm. As why the engine is not dieing every time you downshift, there may be many factors. Assuming that your car has got an RPM meter, compare your idle speed with few figos.(these speeds will be just approximation, meters may differ by a few rpm even if they are from same manufacturer) If you notice that your idle rpm is low, increase it. Even if it is on par with other figos, you may try it and see if it solves the issue. I am currently using a Scorpio which is idling at around 900 rpm and I have seen some Scorpios at the service centre which were idling under 600, 600,700 etc. When I tried reducing my rpm in want of better economy, my vehichle did not sustain comfortably under 800rpm. Though I see other vehicles running at lower rpms, mine would not. It could be that my meter is reporting high, or it could be that other factors of my engine does not allow to idle like that.

Hi,
Given the number of people reporting this problem, would think that this is a system/ design issue, possibly software, rather than a one off component malfunction. In which case to be tackled by Ford India. Dealers would then implement Fords solution. Won't be able to do much on their own. Issue needs to be escalated by all who have faced it.

I have faced it again! ever since last incident I have been keeping a tab on tacho, was overtaking with a/c on and wanted downshifted to 3rd just as I was about to depress the clutch, I saw the RPM dropping rapidly below idle rpm and I heard a chime (the car chimes thrice when it gets stalled) I immediately released the clutch and engine roared back to life and RPM was back to normal again. So somehow managed without stalling the engine, had I not released the clutch and went ahead with the overtaking, I would have been in for a scary surprise.

As described before, the diagnosis on scan tool at *** did not return any error codes, I am beginning to believe that there is fuel supply malfunction!! And looking at Mustang's reply I have a hunch that Ford knows about this (faulty fuel pump) but low fuel running is definitely not the reason behind this.

First of all, we do not know about this
Secondly, I checked, the fuel pump is the same as that on the diesel fiesta, the diesel fusion and the diesel ikon. And it has not got any such problem.

What i would advice you to do is

1. Get a fuel tank cleaning done up first
2. Get the fuel inlet/outlet pipes checked
3. Measure the density of fuel in your car (after you remove it during tank cleaning)
4. Also look for any visible impurities in the fuel.
5. Get back to me after this

Alright, thanks for the update

I will get all those things done would get back to you. Would the service center do it for me?

Yes they would, your car is under warranty, By the way, just start your car and tell me what the idle rpm is.

Its more or less correct, In my fusion, the idle rpm is just above 750 so that i can just see the 750 mark, So basically you can say that for my car its about 770.

How do we do that? Is it something that we can do it without any special equipment?
