I normally start in first gear, but when in slow moving traffic, i start in second. When i move from a signal, i start from first, dont want my car to stop in a signal, then move to 2nd gear..

If you want to feel the real Torque of your machine then its got to be 1st gear Frist. The vehicle tends to shudder a little bit when you take off on 2nd gear and this could seriously damage the entire body mounting over a period of time ultimately leading to unwanted rattles.

So long....

My Santro ZipDrive (1 lit) doesn't even pull in 2nd gear at speeds below about 10 kph with A/C and slightly less without A/C. Actually this is quite irritating, to have to shift to 1st even when the car is moving (sometimes the car jerks if the clutch release is done hastily). So I have no option but to start on 1st. In Ambassador and Fiat (60's vintage) one can even start the car in 2nd, but I didn't follow this practice. In Maruti 800 (1995, no A/C) you can always use 2nd while the car is moving; I used 1st to start from dead stop, but the car might pull in 2nd too with slightly favourable slope.
Regards, rks

If there's even a slight descent I use the 2nd gear on my Swift. 1st gear is used when there's some ascent. After all, my aim's to get to 5th gear as soon as possible and keep the engine in the lower rpm band in city traffic.

Bro, u'll definitely be riding ur clutch. Its not healthy for the car and its a bad habit.
Try quitting it.

I remember climbing a 45 degree slope (maybe even more than 45 degree!) in one of the underground parkings.. and my car stalled mid way.. the reason? i was trying to climb the slope in 2nd gear with a/c on and 2 ppl onboard.
with great difficulty and wheel spins and handbrake usage i manged to climb up from the mid way.. this time in 1st gear.

Ummm... this is actually a "no-brainer" ...

Start in first always...

2nd for 60 - 120Kmph!

I've just started driving.. As per my logic n understanding, it's always the first gear to start off and immediately after getting the initial torque shift to the second gear.
