Team BHP doesn't permit single word responses otherwise all I wanted to say was Wow!

Truly well written and from the heart too. It's amazing to see the Audis beating BMW at their own game. My place is close to an Audi showroom and it's really noticeable the way A4a and A6s have become more visible in recent months- looks like India is really warming up to these.

All these years have been harbouring dreams of owning my own 5 series someday and suddenly the missus pipes up yesterday, "We should get an Audi someday- that's my dream!" I was like

Nice thread- do post that pic!

Harbir, curious as to why you excluded the E class?
I remember from your other thread that you were contemplating buying a used S class. So I assume that buying a comparatively more unreliable brand was not an issue here.
Personally, I feel the E Class is the best among the trio.

Good write up - Thanx. By the way have you finalized on the Audi A6 or would you be trying out the 530D before you give the cheque? Jut curious, never the E made into your list?

Could you add all the pics you took?

The car is for my dad. I am buying a 4x4 myself. The mercedes dealer didn't have a demo car available. I got impressed by the audi. I took my dad to see the car and he fell in love with it. There isn't much motivation to check out the E class. I may do it for the sake of thoroughness, though, but not if it takes chasing after the dealer. I've had my bellyfull of that trying to get test drives of Fortuners and Thars.

the 530d is out. 3.0TDI rivalling speed and a nicer steering wheel than the 525d isn't going to tip the balance in the favor of the 530d. These are luxury cars and the 5 series is neither as luxurious as the A6 nor is it sportier by any near enough to be regarded a sport sedan and thus spared the penalty of not being luxurious enough.

On the pictures, there are three, all taken to show the look of the xenon headlights on cars of three different colors:

Thanks for the pics. One more question. Is the A6 3.0 TDi available both in 2WD & Quattro? If so do you have any idea what's the price difference for the 2WD & Quattro, variant to variant?

Edit:: Also want to ask whether the DRLs on A6 works like strobes? I actually felt that the DRLs are flashing in the new A6.

3.0TDI and 3.0TFSI are both quattros. the 2.0TDI and 3.0TDI are absolutely identical except for the engine and quattro. apart from that, the cars are absolutely identitical.

The dealer who has the petrol car with no options is pushing me to buy today. I don't know what to tell him.

lets see.

oh I forgot to mention: In either car, the rear seat is no match in comfort or space for the old Accord I am driving. If you're tall be careful of either because if you drive, six footers in the back won't be happy and if you sit in the back seat, your driver will need to be a little guy

I was talking to my dad, we got to discussing the european free trade agreement that was supposed to already have been signed, which would reduce import duties on european kit and built up cars by a massive amount.

We're going to feel bloody stupid if the price drops 10 lacs in 8 months.

Doubt its going to happen anytime soon. You know how stuff in our country works. What colour combo, options are you looking at btw?

ideally, it would be black with nougat brown and no options. but in that color combo we're getting the 2.8FSI (not wanted), the 3.0TFSI with 5.5 lacs of options (not wanted), and 3.0TDI with 4 lacs of options (not wanted).

Second choice is white with nougat brown with no options and thats available in both petrol and diesel. We're discussing the petrol vs diesel question

wups, I forgot. the transmissions are also different. These are the variants:

2.8 petrol, wrong wheel drive, CVT transmission
2.0 turbo diesel, wrong wheel drive, CVT
3.0 turbo diesel, four wheel drive, 7 speed DSG
3.0 supercharged petrol, four wheel drive, 7 speed DSG.

I drove an A6 extensively few days back. Compared to my E60 530d, it was _completely_ quite. It never let me have the noisy guilt of driving a diesel, also when it generates torque at the best required time (stop and go traffic).

It pulled equally good, but honestly, a 530d pulls much better. I'd say get a 530d test drive arranged somehow, you'll be impressed with all the more punch and goodies it packs! Handling remains the same as 525d, but the motor generates more power and torque in the 530d!

Regarding the design and quality, the A6, or let me say, all the Audis look a little "light" compared to the "solid" feel in BMWs. Another friend iterated the same to me! Try the inner door handle in the A6. Plastic. BMW? Leather.

Oh and I really liked never having realized gear shifts on the DSG! It felt like just single gear motor! Good or bad, I don't know.

I'd take a BMW for up to 4 PM of a work day. And Audi after work (read: tired). Hehehe.

Great report!!
Recently drove the A6 2.0 TDi, and boy was I impressed with the car.
Having driven the E60 525d and the W211 E270 CDI (both generations of which were more true to their heritage and brand than their new counterparts today IMO), and I totally loved it!
In fact, in my opinion, BMW and Mercedes have taken a step backwards from their previous gen cars, and Audi has taken a step forward! If I had to pick one today, it would be the Audi for a few simple reasons:
- Superb interiors and package
- Nice to drive, though not the best
- Interiors more upmarket than the E (which has taken a step backwards in terms of finish - look at the leather quality between the W211 and W212 for starters), and even the 5 (which IMO lacks character the previous 5 series were known for). However, the E and 5 are more comfortable to sit in.

The Mercedes wins for the following:
- Ride Quality, better rear seats, better engine. The Audi has nicer interiors, as much space, more kit, and looks superb! The W212 feels like a W211 with some cost cutting.

And the BMW for the following:
- Better rear seats, better engine. However, the interiors and exteriors are a big NO for me in terms of design and Audi has better quality and tech with the Air suspension, LCD screen, etc.

serious confusion about whether to go diesel or petrol.

diesel is the sensible choice. low running cost, much easier resale, quite fast.

petrol is that much smoother and faster. ugh
