It is not a brand. OEM suppier.

I have a few anecdotes left before I wrap up this thread

Thank you for your love and appreciation, really. This isn't some epic thread, just an ordinary story of a man and his wife buying a car and you guys make it sound like it's so special. You make it special, really.

After I wrap up this thread I will begin a new story on my Christmas and new years travel. I've been travelling a lot this year but have not posted any travel stories since Greece in April.

Once again, thanks for reading and liking my simple stories. And for coming up to me (like at the auto expo in delhi this time) and telling me you love reading what I write. It is truly wonderful and often humbling to meet you in person. Thank you.
Sam:It was really nice meeting you in the Auto Expo-
You write very well - that is what i told you in the expo- we all wait for your post.

Thanks & Regards

Default Epilogue

It's been a few months. She drives alone. She was never a slow driver, never a smooth one either, not in Germany and certainly not here. She's confident and really quite quick - all in all a good driver.

Somehow sitting in the left side passenger seat as she sits in the right side driver seat makes it feel like we have come a full circle from our first holiday together where we switched seats, but she still drove.

She honks regularly beep beep and parks in tight corners. She plays music really loud and sings as she drives, occasionally lowering the window to shout an HEY or to deliver an occasional unkind word.
Beep beep.

----------------------------------------------------------------

We were talking, on the hands-free car telephone one day as she was driving when she said she had to go, a cop was waving her over. I relate the story as she said it to me.

The cop pulls her over. She disconnects my call saying cops and pulls over to the side.

He walks over and she lowers the window. He falters for a few seconds as he realises. Foreigner lady driver.

Madam license.

She isn't carrying her International Driving License today. Just her German one.
She pulls out her German driving license from her bag and hands it over. He stares at it for a few seconds, blinking and speaks to her in a language she doesn't understand.

Sorry, no Hindi. English please.
Madam this not license.
Yes it is my license.
What country?
Germany.
You don't have Indian license?
No.
This not allowed.
What do you mean?
This not allowed driving. This not international license.

She doesn't blink an eye. Yes it is allowed. My husband drives with his Indian license in Germany and that is allowed. So I must be allowed to drive with this license in India as well.
She knows this isn't entirely true. I am only allowed to drive with my license so long as I am in Germany for less than 6 months and assuming the law of reciprocation, the same must be true here.
She is allowed to drive with her International License, but she doesn't have that here.
She holds her ground nonetheless.

No madam, this not allowed.
Yes it is allowed, you check your law book!

He looks confused and walks back to his superior officer. The officer peers at the German license and hands it back to the policeman. There is a slight shrug there. They don't know what to do.

He walks back.
You broke signal madam.
Did I?
Yes. It was red.
I'm sorry, I must not have seen it.

Meanwhile I'm having kittens. The last word she said to me was "cops" and I haven't heard from her in over 6 minutes! I call again.
She disconnects my call. Dammit.

I will take license. You collect it from station.
What is the fine?
she asks.
100 rupees.
Why don't you take it now from me.
No receipt.

Eyes widen a little in realization. She has lived long enough in India and has seen this happen before.

She fishes into her bag and takes 20 rupees out.
Madam only 20?
Yeah sure. No receipt, remember?

In one swift motion she places 20 bucks in the dumbfounded cops hand with one hand and pulls out the license with the other.

Before he knows what's going on, she's started the car and moved on quickly. A quick look in the mirror just shows him standing there in shock.

Ring ring.
Hello Sam.
What happened?
I ran a red light by accident and the police pulled me over.
What the hell, why don't you call me, I was worrying about you. Where is the cop, let me speak to him..
Relax Sam, I handled it.
What do you mean?
I handled it. I gave him 20 rupees and took my license.
You gave him 20 rupees???
Yes. Everything is ok, I'm on my way home. See you.

Click.

!!!

Even though she has disconnected, my mobile is still on my cheek and I'm grinning.

Somehow today feels like graduation day.
------------------------------------------------------------

The End.

applause for the lady!!
Wonderfully handled the situation!!

The traffic guy must have been really dumbfounded for the 80% forced discount, he had to accept on his chaipaani !!

In most such situations I would have stayed on and bargained, but TheOne is THE ONE!!
Hats off!!

And reading this I am seriously. Imagine the shock on the policeman's face after this, he didn't even had the time to react.

Baba Samananda , we are also grinning ear to ear. Wish I could press the thanks button a few more times but the darn link does not allow me to. Office stress? what office stress? when you write such dialogues on a monologue version, it is so intensely funny that I am smiling, sometimes grinning stupidly and my colleagues are looking across as if I have lost it . nirvana

Firstly, congrats on the new red German (the car, I mean!).

What was most striking, was the last post by you Sam. Jenny sure seems to have adopted to the Indian ways of getting things done.
Heck, she's gone a step ahead. Womanly instincts, I suppose. I would've handed the damned 100 bucks and moved on!

Congrats once again. How about some nice snaps of the car now?

I knew it would be a Polo.

Sam, not fair... if you were in VW Downtown, you should have informed me. :-(

Amazing HU, just loved it to the core.

Also, just 20 bucks??? That like W-O-W!

Please congratulate Jenny on truly attaining desi status. Bribing a policeman and that too at a huge discount over the regular rate is something that even the most hardened sons of the soil are not able to pull off. She managed it with elan

A Red Polo is truly beautiful and I love the HU you've installed as well. All the best with the car.

She gave him twenty rupees?

That's like expecting a Chennai auto driver to drive the whole length of the city for Rs5!

Where's the animated raising-hat smiley?

Cant stop now, am imagining the poor guys face on the rear view mirror.

That way i guess women are more confident in pulling such stunts, where we men worry, then try to argue and land up paying 500 bucks fine lol

Price of Bribe: 20rs
Actual penalty for breaking a signal: 100rs
Shock on the face of policeman after paying the measly bribe: PRICELESS!!!

APPLAUSE!!!

Hats off to Jenny for handling it so coolly. I can imagine the dialogue from him "I caught a Foreign lady today breaking a signal. I thought I could extract atleast $20 from her, but she gave me 20 rs!!!"

hahahahaha, only 20 bucks? Even a cheapskate like me thinks 50 bucks is the least to be offered. I used to get away with 10 and 20 bucks bakshish back in college.

God, the things lady drivers can get away with. I don't have the cojones to try and pay off a cop with a 20 buck note. I think I'd be in deep, deep trouble if I tried to pull that off

Mad props to Jenny for making this happen. That cop will not forget her in a 100 lifetimes

Ah! so it was finally the VW for TheOne.

A very interesting read; especially the part on her jumping the red light and getting away by paying a cool twenty bucks.
