Default A dream come true: My Purple Mahindra XUV5OO W8 FWD

Me: I am planning to buy a new car
Wife: Are you nuts? Our Linea is just 3.5 years old and doing great. Why new?
Me: I am in love with XUV
Wife: Frowns. What the hell is that?
Me: It’s a monocoque SUV
Wife: Mono what?

I smile. It gives so much satisfaction to lead your better half in such a situation they are completely ignorant about and you are their sole mode of information. Ah, the pleasure of that moment.
And thus started my quest of convincing her about my to be new sweetheart XUV W8 FWD.

BACKGROUND:
I had been driving a Fiat Linea Emotion Pack MJD bossa nova white since the last 3.5 years and it had been a relatively hassle less experience. It is a beautiful car with wonderful road manners. It was love at first sight then and it was love again at first sight with XUV 5oo ever since it was launched.
It did wonders in its initial sales with long waiting periods. Then started niggles thread on this site which also ran into hundreds of pages. Mahindra responded and tried to correct some of the weaknesses with the release of new improved XUV 5oo (version 2). That is when the thought of owning one crossed my mind. But it was a tough decision to convince the family about buying a new car as linea was doing just fine and buying a bigger car for routine city drive did not make any sense to any of them.
I was given an option to consider buying a premium hatchback instead for city run about and keep linea for highway driving. And i did consider it for a while and test drove i20, grand i10 and swift. But the thought did not excite me and finally it was decided to go for a car one segment higher than linea which everyone approves (not necessarily XUV).
I considered the following cars other than XUV:
1) Hyundai Elantra:
• Beautiful car inside out
• Elegant high quality interiors
• Long feature list (matches XUV feature wise plus some more)
• Spacious car
• Hyundai service backup
• Negatives – Around 1.5 lakhs pricier than XUV
- Rear seat comfortable for 2 (central hump and wide armrest)

2) Chevy Cruze:
• Stylish exteriors and interiors
• Awesome power
• Greatly reduced turbo lag in the new version
• Negatives – Rear space at a premium
- Only 2 airbags
- Sparse feature list
- No Bluetooth phone connectivity for calling

3) Hyundai Verna and Tata Storme:
These two were never in reckoning but considered them just for the sake of it

4) Renault Duster:
Although the reviews were good but it never gave me the feeling of a 13 lakh car (on road), so it did not struck the right chord for me.
So it was XUV for me and my family finally. I had a bit of confusion regarding the variant to buy. I considered W6 for a while mainly due to lesser electronics and thus fewer niggles but finally went with the heart for W8 variant.

BOOKING:
My linea was Chandigarh registered and for some strange reason it was not getting a good price here in Amritsar. Maximum was 3.25 lakhs and that too after much negotiation. No car dealer was ready to take it because of it being registered in Chandigarh.
So i decided to try my luck in Chandigarh. I went to Swami Automobiles and negotiated with them regarding the exchange of my linea for an XUV. After negotiations, i got the following:

1) Exchange value of Rs 4.0 lakhs for linea
2) Rs 15000 exchange bonus
3) Rs 10000 cash discount
4) R 10000 accessories.

I paid Rs 40000 as booking amount on 09/10/13 for XUV W8 FWD silver colour, and was told that i will get the delivery in 7-10 days. I got a call from them on 23/10/13 evening to take the car the next day. But as i was going out of station for 4 days it was not possible for me to do so.
When i came back on 27/10/13 and inquired about the car, i came to know that there was no silver colour available and the only ones left were black or purple in W8.
Black was not an option as i wanted black interiors and black came with beige ones. I had not thought of purple as an option but i liked the colour on the net and then i saw one on the road and it looked beautiful, only hassles were the difficult maintenance of the colour. But 10-15 days of waiting for the new batch was now too much for me so i decided to take the plunge.
Finally i took the delivery of the car from swami automobiles on 31/10/13 around 6 pm and drove it back to Amritsar. Overall it was a pleasant buying experience from the dealer without any major unwanted hassles
It being a new car and coupled with dark surroundings, i drove it patiently not going above 85-90 km/hr speed.
Those 250 km of driving gave me enough time to become familiar with the ride, handling and features of the car.
Following are the initial observations:

1. Brakes: Feel a lot better now but still it lacks the initial bite (brakes in my linea were awesome)

2. Clutch: No problem with it although it feels a bit hard and has along play (just like linea)

3. Infotainment system is just awesome although
- They could have improved the song search system
- Use of phone through a button on the steering would have been much better.
- Voice control for calling should have been there.

4. Interiors to me look just brilliant. There are a few iffy areas but on the whole they are more than acceptable.

5. Suspension: much improved than before although a bit on the firm side.

6. Music system: Feels much better than my linea (it was just pathetic)

7. Hill hold: Tried it thrice on the flyover and it worked flawlessly.

8. Cruise control: worked fine

9. Handling: Having driven a linea for 3.5 years, XUV s handling certainly surprised me. It handled the corners pretty good although it would be foolish of me to expect linea like handling.

10. Gearshift: The first gear is a bit notchy although the others (even 2nd) are absolutely fine.

11. The central console reflection: Although it is present but strangely i have not found it to be very distracting.

12. Seats and Ride: Front seats are just awesome in thigh, lumbar and lateral support. Because they are a bit firm, they offer good non tiring ride on long drives. (As i discovered while riding from Chandigarh to Amritsar) The ride quality is pretty good for front seats although the suspension is a bit firm. I have not sit in the back seat so cannot comment on it although my wife and parents did not complain for a short while that they sat there.

13. Acres of space in front and middle seats and coupled with a flat middle seat floor. It is a very comfortable 5 seater.

Wish list:

1) Voice control for calling (present in linea)
2) Windows Auto up at least for driver side (present in linea)
3) Better system of music and phonebook search rather than pressing on the touch screen or list button (it feels a lot tedious doing so)
4) Sun roof
5) Electric powered driver seat.
6) Sliding second row seats (absolute oversight on the part of mahindra)

What i liked so far?

1) Stylish exteriors with wow factor involved
2) Beautiful headlamps with LED
3) Side profile is particularly pleasing to look at
4) Spacious interiors particularly for 1st and 2nd row
5) Beautifully designed interiors
- Waterfall console elegantly laid down
- Infotainment touch screen with inbuilt navigation
- Grab and lock door handles
- lounge lighting
6) Plenty of storage spaces
7) Lots of gizmos
8) Extremely comfortable front seats with excellent thigh, lumbar and lateral support
9) Good enough handling for such a huge car
10) 5.6 m turning radius
12) Soft touches at some places (Door pads, horn pad, arm rest)
13) Cooled storage box in armrest
14) AND FINALLY THE BIG ONES- ABS, ESP, 6 AIRBAGS

What i did not like?

1) Suspension is a bit firm
2) Missing auto up for driver window at least
3) Tedious to search for contacts and songs from the touch screen (should have been integrated in steering controls)
4) Useless armrest
5) 3rd row strictly for children
6) Missing sliding 2nd row seats (would have made 3rd row much more usable especially with such huge space available in 2nd row)

Congratulations for the Cheetah Doctor.

However, one silly request from my side... please give up wearing those bell bottom jeans, go for casual fit, if not tight fit. You can also try the coloured denims in vogue these days, since you look fit to carry those easily.

I am glad you went for opulent purple. It was my first choice too, but my parents did not want a "purple" XUV!

Congratulations and enjoy your ride.

Congrats @manasmadaan. Purple is indeed challenging to maintain. Looks great though.
So the new ones, have two major changes that I could see. The W8 badging is no more on the left front door, but on the boot door and the boot door opening strip, which was black plastic is now chrome.

Btw when I saw the shots of the car where it's parked close to a wall and the door almost hitting the wall, I was

That's loads of pictures. The t-bhp sticker on the rear wheel arch could have been placed better, the current position is innovative though. The color does look good in the pics.

Wish you miles of safe & trouble free motoring.

Thanks. That chrome is an after market fitment but yes w8 badging has moved to the boot door.
And for the door grazing the wall I had carefully rested the doors so that the door protectors hit the wall and not the doors. I was too lazy to move the car that time. But yes I will be careful in future.
