Hey GTO... Great and inspiring thread. I can see a lot of people have been inspired to pick up pre worshipped beasts after reading your thread. Even i'v been a pre-worshipped fan albeit only when i managed finding good examples. I bought a civic (12k kms done sold at 96k kms), accord (35k kms done sold at 49k kms)and a verna (9k kms done running strong at 27k kms right now) pre-owned while i bought a city, rexton, octavia and a 320 firsthand. For me its all about value and more often than not i'v managed getting very good deals (mostly in terms of the condition of the car) with my pre-owned cars.

Now the query. I'v been offered a 2012 X3 3.0 done only 42k kms and the asking price is 30l. The car is out of warranty and has no BSI available. The dealer though has assured me that the car is in immaculate condition with new brakes and tyres (I also know the owners of the car so could approach them for the history if i want to move forward). Do you think its worth it? Also in the pipeline in its stead is a unregistered 2014 model c220 CDI Edition C which has just done 7k kms with an ex-showroom price of 28l.

I am not really in a rush and its more of a heart winning over mind deal happening with me as i don't really require a car at the moment but i have an itch which has just grown stronger post reading your thread.

Do advice if either of the above vehicles make sense.

I know the Q is to GTO but just offering a personal input. The C220 being unregistered and with 7000 km on ODO sounds completely like a TD vehicle. If that's the case I'd suggest you avoid it even though I recognize you will reflect as first owner on paper.

The X3 doesn't sound like a bad option actually at that price considering it's the 3.0 version. 2013 with 30-35,000 Kms would have been a bit nicer at even a 35 lakh price range I would think. Do check if this is an older gen X3 to the current version. I don't know off hand.

Thanks for the input any advice is always welcome. Yes I'm sure it'll be a TD vehicle too. And the warranty also being offered is only post the vehicle being billed to the dealer so I'm assuming it's already on the second year now.
The x 3 on the other hand is the new gen before the midlife makeover that has happened recently. I just confirmed on the brake job too and it has just been serviced.

If you have owned a 3 series before then the C class won't cut it in terms of driving experience.

The X3 if its in good condition is worth a serious look. Its a car which will give you good driving pleasure, and practicality in terms of space and ground clearance. So you can take it on long drives, etc which you would have to think twice for taking a sedan on.

The price seems good if you consider what a new X3 3.0 costs today. Whether to buy it or not depends on your risk appetite. Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable with a used European that's out of warranty. Spend a little more and get a newer piece whose warranty you can extend to 6 years.

If you decide to buy it, be sure to get a full PPI done at a BMW dealer. Also talk to the previous owner and get its full service / problem history.

Avoid. Dealer demo car = badly abused.

Might have encountered my first issue with the 530d!

BMW 530d M-Sport (F10) : My pre-worshipped beast-whatsapp-image-20160810-12.03.01.jpeg

There was a lot of moisture buildup on the glass area when the car was parked. While trying to figure out what was causing it, I found the rear left passenger's floor soaking wet. I'm not talking just wet - I'm talking about a 'full bucket of water' wet . Then found even the front passenger's carpet to be drenched. Took my man over an hour just to take the water out. The area on the right is absolutely fine - it's dry.

I'm guessing some kind of leakage, either from a sunroof drain or door channel. Sending the car over to Navnit Motors. Chap at Navnit Motors says 'lots of BMWs are in for leakage issues right now'. Is this a BMW specific issue? I don't remember my C220 or any other Mercedes suffering from this. Google search shows a lot of new model BMW owners complaining.

Will update once I have more information. Going to lose time as we're entering a long weekend. But I'd rather have the car parked indoors at Navnit than in my building where it's exposed to rain.

Good thing that I got the 6-year extended warranty. They're going to check & fix it for free.

Don't have a BMW, but it's a pretty common issue with a lot of cars during heavy rains and/or over-enthusiastic pressure washing at A.S.S.

The LHS drain channel under the front windscreen can sometimes cause cabin leakage, esp in heavy rains.

The outlet (which usually drains somewhere behind the front quarter panel) gets clogged over a period of time due to assorted grime/leaves/twigs, and sometimes it may just be a case of rainfall being heavier than drainage capacity. A lot of cars have their A/C fresh air inlet placed in/around the channel, and this gives the water a way into the cabin through the A/C duct into the front passenger foot-well.

It's very sad to see our beloved cars getting water seepage due to whatever reason. I have seen a guy who is selling water proof car covers, TPH covers online. I don't know how good are their car covers though. Have sparingly used one from an OEM, but it wasn't water proof.

Only a few months ago during the rainy season here in KL I have seen two cars at a german car specialist garage in my city with this exact same issue. Yes like you said bucketful of water. One was a current 5 series and another a 3 series with its seats and carpets stripped and left for drying in the sun. The water ingress i am told is from the windshield cowl area (passenger side) and as per the technical head there, and he said he has handled several similar cases in his garage before. He was very casual about it, but for me it was surprising!

More than the door or sunroof channel , I believe the seepage may be through the area below the windshield. That or probably the air-condition inlet. That's the issue with most of the cars - happens a lot in my Baleno and a friend's Alto. Fortunately never ever happened in my Xylo.

Ouch!

More than anything what worries me is the electronics below the seat!

Below the front seats you might have any of the following hardware, audio amplifier, rear TV entertainment control module, sub woofer, BCM, keyless go system, electric seats module.

There's a lot of electronics and this looks like a lot of work. Make sure you check absolutely everything once you get the car back.

On a lighter note, first you have to be careful of the hydrostatic lock, you have to watch out for the run flats and now this.

It is reassuring to have warranty on your side, but what if somebody did not have the extended warranty. Besides the financial implications it becomes greatly inconvenient to send/ drop the car at the dealership.

Why can't they have better preventive maintenance, when the car goes for routine service. There are so many things which cannot be brought back to their original condition.

The best part is that GTO's got the 6 year warranty with him handy. So he doesn't have to worry about anything even if it goes kaput.

I've never been a fan of Extended warranties or service packages since they are too expensive and I don't drive much but when I read issues such as these I'm beginning to change my mind.
