My uncle had logged in 45k on the S10. I will put in some pics soon. Was debating whether to put them now or after i finish redoing the exteriors by next month.

I will go ahead and put in the pics of the car in the current condition soon.

The first thing I did was change over to Yokohama. So I have no clue how the braking would have been in the previous set of tires.
I dread what stock tires would brake like considering even with the new Yokohamas the braking doesn't give me confidence.

Congrats Sahakar,

If you are planning for LPG/CNG... go with LPG Sequential Kit.. it is really worth the premium that you pay for

I hope to start doing research on the CNG/LPG kit soon. I am still inclined on a CNG sequential kit due to the low running costs of CNG and very little loss of power.

Currently I spend around 8k a month on petrol and the savings on CNG are just too tempting. I can always switch back to petrol (I hope) when I feel the need for speed...

An update on the fuel economy.
Have been driving defensively after the last fill and have managed 11kms per litre in city driving with A/C being used 50-75% of the time.
It was a pleasant surprise as never thought would get more than 8 kms in the S10.

Thats a good mileage , I dont get more than 7.5 kmpl with or without a/c, offensive or defensive driving irrelevant, mileage has been constant 7 - 7.5 kmpl in my s10.

Valid Point. Make your own road.
i think upgrading the tyres might improve braking. Bhpian Naveen.kk has an S10 with upgraded wider tyres and still manages to get more than 11 in the city and he gets around 16 on the highway. Not so sedate driving.
Congrats on the buy.

.. WHAT??? a mileage of 11 kmpl in city on S10? I have never managed more than 9 in city with spirited driving. On highway at best 13.

Congrats folks if you get this kind of mileage. You in that case have best of both worlds -- mileage + unlimited power

Cheers,

Cheers,

A few things that I have been doing different to improve mileage -
1. In stop go traffic I just don't hit the accelerator. I just take my foot of the clutch in the 1st gear, the car moves and I shift to 2nd without touching the accelerator. I even manage to do that when I shift from 2nd to 3rd on quite a few occasions.
2. I try to drive as if there are no brakes in the car. So I try to anticipate when the traffic ahead of me is slowing down and I just take the foot of the pedal such that I roll to a stop without using brakes, esp at incoming signals.
3. I keep my acceleration linear and refrain from flooring the pedal
4. And lastly I try and not go above 80 (maybe 100) on the highway

Of course, once a week I let myself loose and exactly do the opposite of the above. After all, the car has its character and cannot keep it sedate for long.

Default Re: From buying an Accord to Getz to finally a Palio S10

Its been ages since I have updated this thread of mine. Thought at least do a small update today.

I still have my S10 as my primary car. Its still as awesome as it was 3 years back. I have got to try to replace it soon but just can't seem to let go of it.

Other than normal city driving, its been to Goa, Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala, Lavasa, Daman multiple times and with no issues. It loves the highways. On the highways I just slot it to the 5th gear and then its like an automatic. No need to downshift to overtake. It overtakes effortlessly even in the 5th.

After all the initial preventive maintenance I had done, the S10 has been nice to me and has been very frugal on maintenance. Its been just the 3 month normal maintenance (oil, coolant, etc) cycle past three years with some occasional preventive maintenance.

Of course Bombay roads and you are bound to get some dents. So have spent some money on re-painting doors, etc as I don't like even a single scratch on my car.

A bad side wall puncture led me to replace two front tires last month. So tires are again back to new and I have now have two spares :-)

If I really can't make myself to sell the car, then I think will go the whole hog now and do a total performance upgrade on it.

Cheers

Just stumbled upon this treasure of a thread. From one Palio owner to another (1.3 stile MJD though), big thumbs up!

Getting a 45k run S10 for 1 lakh is just stupendous. A monster of a car, and just 500 of these beasts ever made. Exclusivity comes as a side dish! Keep the thread updated please. As soon as I start getting 2nd hand cars, this is one on my list. Or at least a 1.6 GTX

One more update on my S10 -

I have been hunting for two cars recently - A small one for the wifey and a sedan / SUV for me. Plan was to replace my S10 and with a heavy heart decided now was the time.

After driving almost all the options available in the market, I have come to realize once again what an awesome car the S10 is.

I have totally junked off the idea of getting rid of the S10 now. And am getting the car basically back to new again. I have always maintained it well and will start another round of preventive maintenance on it.

I will still buy the two cars in the near future but the S10 will stay with me unless or until I find a real auto enthusiast who will continue to do justice to it.

Last month I got the following done -
1. Entire clutch assembly replaced - Gear shifts are now as good if not better than a new car
2. Battery replaced
3. Replaced the timing belt and tensioner belt
4. Engine tuned
5. Pretty much all the moving parts of the car lubricated or cleaned. I can feel the difference even for simple things like turning the key to open the door.
6. Removed all the rubber from doors, cleaned and put it all back together
7. Same for the windscreen - removed, cleaned and put it back

Once the rains subside a little the following will be done
1. Some dent and color work. A nice external treatment to follow that.
2. Replace the suspension
3. Change the seat covers
4. Anything else that I find needs replaced or changed but I guess I won't really have anything much pending to do. The car would be as good as new.

I should be down around 40-50k once I get all the work done but will be money spent well.

I am going to try my best to keep this thread updated and once I get the color work done will also put in the latest snaps.

Cheers

Thanks, mate.

I know you gotta own a S10 to really experience the awesomeness that this car is. All my recent dealership visits makes me even more proud of it.

Drive wise, this is miles ahead than any other hatchback on offer right now.
Even cosmetically, things like a awesome exhaust pipe, sport pedals, side step garnish, side body protectors, etc which are all extra fitments or additions to all these new cars are all factory fitted into the S10.

I am totally flabbergasted that even 8 years ago this kind of a car was available to buy on Indian roads and now we get such under powered tin cars in name of efficiency.

As for the cost of my car, though the initial cost was low thanks to my uncle, I must have spent around the same or a little bit more to get it all new but all worth it.

Cheers

Congrats mate. How much has it done now?
Are you still getting the 11kmpl mileage in City?
Happy to see that it has been absolutely trouble free so far...
And also kudos to you for doing all preventive maintenance.

max mileage i got so far is 14 in highways with 80-100kmph driving.if i drive it in 140-160kmph speeds,it drops to 12.
Planning to do the timing belt+other belts change and also ignition coil to check if that increases the mileage.

Happy mile muching and also all the best for your new car purchases.

I really haven't done much more mile crunching. I think I may have added another 10k kms in the last couple of years or so. I really need to check the total mileage once I go back to the car

I pretty much stopped using it as my daily office car since last year due to incessant traffic and now use it only for the weekends and long drive vacations.

I also haven't checked on efficiency figures since quite some time. I will do a tank full to tank full check this time around and post the figures soon. I have just filled her up a couple of days back so will take me at least a couple of weeks before I am able to update.

I think your 14km on the highway sounds quite near the best.
You may still be able to get another 2km or so if you use a still lighter foot on the accelerator and drive as if you don't have brakes in the car.
If you reduce your speed to 65km/hr you will easily get around 16 to 18km mileage but then who wants to go that slow on a S10

Cheers
