The pickup in 2nd gear has improved a lot of late but it is a bit bad if travelling uphill until it is warmed up !!!

Ever heard that - "The best form of Defense is Offense/ Aggression"
Defensive driving, I feel, has higher probability of accidents/ brush up. Instead I prefer to drive normally, care-free without being overtly concious

I have tried that too.
But missed a lot of brushes and mean accident
In Chennai,No one cares of other vehicles. They wanted to go faster than others.
No courtesy in driving .They simply do what they want without watching on coming or tailing vehicles.
But if you drive car in Chennai,Then you can easily drive car in any where in the UNIVERSE .
Everyday we get a good practice.
Some of the Cab wala might win F1 oneday with his TATA Indica itself.

My wife noticed black smoke coming from my car. Is it normal for CRDI cars to emit black smoke?

Ya ya it's very common in Linea including Petrol variants.
I have checked personally in both Diesel and petrol.

I second that. At railway crossing, the ongoing waiting line on left side becomes sometimes smaller than the wrong right side where vehicles keep on going to quickly move from ahead . No traffic sense at all. High Two wheeler penetration does not help either.

I was in Pune 15 years back for 2 years & the traffic sense was very good as compared to Ahmedabad.

Mumbai traffic is bit disciplined but thats due to compulsion rather than a choice. If you suddenly move to left or right (if at all thats possible with 1 inch space available), the incoming vehiclefrom behind might brush your car.

To all those pining for number one! I would say all of India is same. Metros, with their slightly better traffic planning help reduce the chaos, but still, the chaos is there. In Kerala, the 100% literate state, you find people driving like illiterates. I mean, people invest in 3-10L in a car, but generally do not invest even two paise in driving discipline. Last year I visited Taranto, Italy and found the traffic situation there same as India. A lot of swearing by drivers at each other like we see here.

+2 from me. Was in Ahmedabad yesterday and it did test my driving skills in merging traffic. Actually Baroda trains you better as we do not have wide roads and I read somewhere that Baroda stood 5th in India for the number of vehicles per family (Ludhiana topped that list). So imagine narrow - dug up roads and no discipline.

But yes, the story is quite true all across India !!

Cheers, Sam
